GPU Drops while playing Minecraft on Thinkpad E485

2020-04-15, 18:46 PM

Hey, everybody,

I'm having trouble with my laptop.

I often have intermittent lags while playing Minecraft. Yes, I know the Thinkpad isn't really designed for this, but I didn't have any problems before. I have observed that the graphics chip usage sometimes drops sharply (down to 10%) and then it lags. If the game runs smoothly the load is about 60%. I haven't seen a pattern when the load drops and it stops. In the meantime I have also jacked up the laptop to allow a sufficient air supply.

Does anybody have an idea?

If further information should be necessary, just ask.

I use the laptop with an AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Graphics.

GPU Drops while playing Minecraft on Thinkpad E485

This might be a power budget issue. Try installing the unofficial software "Ryzen Controller". I used it to set the VRM current to 50A when gaming to allow the gpu to run at full tilt, just watch out for CPU load with this current as the temperature can spike really high.
