Integrated HD 720p camera

2012-08-31, 14:23 PM

I recently purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 without the integrated camera before learning to realize that integrated webcams are not standard on all Edge models. Now my laptop doesn't have a webcam and I wanted to get that installed now. I was wondering how I would be able to go about this?

Or is it possible to install the webcam youself?  I see the installation instructions in the hardware manual, but I can't seem to find the standalone camera on lenovo's site. Any help on this topic would be appreciated. Thanks.

welcome to the community!

i'm pretty sure that if something "bad" were to happen while you had the lcd assembly torn apart, that your warranty would be voided. is it worth the risk? maybe Lenovo Service could do the job for you, and then the camera would be covered, too? might be worth asking...

i've torn down and rebuilt many thinkpads and the part i despise the most is the lcd assembly.

regards.

Yeah, that's a good point. Probably don't want to mess with it myself. So I've contacted a couple of Lenovo service providers directly about it and one of them told me that it wouldn't be possible to install the camera after purchase because it would require a new top case and that would cost more buying a new laptop... which was a bit confusing to me because two other service providers have told me that they would be able to do it, one for an hourly rate of $75 and the other told me they would get back to me on the cost in a little bit. So I guess we'll see how it goes.

Haven't gone to a service provider before, but if I were to get it done for the service hourly rate of $75, which to me seems a bit steep, it can't possibly take more than an hour to install the camera, would it?

well... i've torn down t-series lcd assemblies faster than an hour, but i have no experience working on edge machines. i guess it all comes down to how badly you want the camera.

does your current machine have a plugged cut-out in the lcd bezel where the camera would sit?

Yeah, there's a cut out in the lcd bezel where the camera would go. It's just that there's no camera in it, just a black dot right now.

ok, that makes me believe that you *don't* need a new lcd cover like the first servicer quoted, but i don't have the fru parts listing reference.

please do let us know how you decide to proceed and the outcome. others may be wondering about the same modification.

cheers.

Hello! I exactly want the same thing, I forgot to add the darn web cam when I order my E430 and now I want it. Well, I contacted sales dept and they told me that once I purchased my computer there is no way I can get that camera. Still, I asked the lady why cant I buy only the camera but they do have a manual online on how to install it? That just make no sense. Here is the link on the installation of the camera

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=PD023397

So I dont know, I think Im going to have to buy an external, I do want and need the internal camera but I wont die if the camera is external.

Please let me know if you find any place to buy this part.

@hlzn...

welcome to the community!

you can get the complete hardware maintenance manual here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=UM014301

the FRU parts list is here: http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/ThinkPadEdgeE430_2012-04-10.pdf

listing 7 possible part numbers.

try them at the service parts site here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-50278

to see availability.

if parts are available, for a cost you're willing to pay, then you'll just need to decide if it's worth the risk of voiding your warranty if something goes haywire during teardown/installation/reassembly.

regards.
