Lenovo E495 RAM upgrade

2019-08-21, 15:26 PM

Hi,

I have just bought a new lenovo thinkpad e495 and I would like to upgrade RAM (have 16GB single channel, would like to have 32GB dual channel).

Tech. spec says the notebook supports up to 2x16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM. However my laptop contains DDR4 2666MHz module (samsung, CL 19). I am not able to buy another samsung module in my country.

Is it possible to replace the original single module with two 2400MHz CL14 modules (hyperx)? Or is there some benefit when adding another 2666MHz CL19 module (kingston)?

Thank you for answer.

Miro

Hi,

E495 supports max 2400Mhz memory. As CPU design limit, your memory only works at max 2400Mhz even though it is a 2666Mhz memory. Please refer to below E495 platform sepcification. I suggest you to use two same same brand RAM in system in case of any compatibility problem. Thanks!

ThinkPad E495 Platform Specifications

Installed memory is actually 2666MHz but run at 2400MHz due to AMD limitation

You can use cpu-z to verify what the current RAM is actually running at, and the voltage. You're welcome to buy another stick at the same mhz, latency, and voltage; and it'll run in dual channel regardless of brand mismatch. No need to buy a whole new set.

Were you able to get this ram above 933 Mhz (1866DDR)? I have the same laptop and I am returning it because I was told by support that 933Mhz is the only speed the ram will run at no matter what and Ryzen APUs absolutely need memory bandwidth. I bought this on the strength of having at least DDR4 2400 speeds.

Could you check in CPU-z and verify? I have it from three other sources it is reporting 933Mhz including both reviewers. Check out this review and the CPU screenshots: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-E495-Laptop-Review-Inexpensive-office-device-with-a-lot-of-power-but-without-keyboard-illumination.434877.0.html

So how do you make it run at 2400Mhz? There are no BIOS settings for RAM.

I was wrong! The battery can be replaced! The ram is still downclocked but I am sure a BIOS updaate will fix that. I am keeping the laptop.

For me this notebook is brilliant. Fast enough for SW development, small, silent, with USB-C and less than half the price of Dell XPS (which I was als considering). If needed,I can always buy a port multiplier.
