My 21JUS1J400 laptop takes a very long time to get out of sleep mode

My E16 Gen 1 ThinkPad takes a very long time to go from sleep mode to the Lenovo splash screen ... I have to press the start button 2-3 times before the splash screen appears. I am thinking that is not normal behavior, but am at a loss to solve it.

Re:My 21JUS1J400 laptop takes a very long time to get out of sleep mode

Hi grstatdoc,

Thank you for reaching out to the Lenovo Community. I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're experiencing with your E16 Gen 1 ThinkPad. Let's try to resolve this together.

Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the slow wake-up issue:

  1. Update Drivers and BIOS:

    • Ensure that all your system drivers and BIOS are up to date. You can use the Lenovo Vantage App to check for and install any available updates.
  2. Power Settings:

    • Check your power settings to ensure they are optimized for performance. Go to Control Panel > Power Options and select the "High Performance" plan. You can also customize the plan settings to ensure the system does not enter a deep sleep state.
  3. Fast Startup:

    • Enable Fast Startup if it is not already enabled. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and ensure that "Turn on fast startup" is checked.
  4. Check for Background Processes:

    • Sometimes, background processes can cause delays. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check if any processes are consuming high resources when the system is waking up.
  5. Hardware Diagnostics:

    • Run a hardware diagnostic test to rule out any potential hardware issues. You can do this through the Lenovo Vantage App or by visiting the Lenovo Support Website.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions or need additional assistance.

Best regards,

Jwes_Lenovo

Re:My 21JUS1J400 laptop takes a very long time to get out of sleep mode

1. Saga of Bios and firmware updates:

Bios and firmware updates frozen at 87%

Force turned off machine
Powered on the machine .. Black screen
Force turned off machine
Powered on machine 2nd time
Force turned off machine 3rd time
(Wondering if it well ever reach the Lenovo splash screen)
After a half hour or so, finally got it to reboot.
Bios and Firmware updates succeeded
Waiting to reboot to finish (where I've been hung up)
Took about 5 minutes
Doing secend update

Rebooted

2. High Performance mode selected (needed to go through Systen > Settings to do this)

3. Fast startup is turned on

4. Can't quite tell what is consuming what on startup (although I disabled MS Edge andits 16 subprocesses)

5. Hardware Diagnostics found no problems

Re:My 21JUS1J400 laptop takes a very long time to get out of sleep mode

Hi grstatdoc,

Thank you for the detailed update on the steps you've taken so far. It sounds like you've been very thorough in your troubleshooting. Given the persistence of the issue, let's try a few additional steps to see if we can resolve the slow wake-up problem:

  1. Check for Windows Updates:

    • Ensure that your Windows operating system is fully updated. Sometimes, system updates can resolve underlying issues. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
  2. Disable Hybrid Sleep:

    • Hybrid sleep can sometimes cause delays in waking up. To disable it, go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Expand the Sleep section, then expand Allow hybrid sleep, and set it to Off.
  3. Check Event Viewer:

    • The Event Viewer can provide insights into what might be causing the delay. Open Event Viewer by typing eventvwr in the Run dialog (Win + R). Look for any critical errors or warnings under Windows Logs > System around the time you wake the laptop from sleep.
  4. Clean Boot:

    • Perform a clean boot to see if any third-party services or startup programs are causing the delay. Instructions for a clean boot can be found here.
  5. Reset Power Plans to Default:

    • Sometimes custom power settings can cause issues. Reset your power plans to default settings by opening Command Prompt as an administrator and running the following command: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
  6. Check SSD/HDD Health:

    • If your laptop has an SSD or HDD, check its health using tools like CrystalDiskInfo or the built-in Lenovo Vantage App. A failing drive can cause slow wake-up times.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be beneficial to perform a system restore to a point before the issue started, or as a last resort, consider a factory reset. If the problem persists, it might be a hardware-related issue, and I recommend contacting Lenovo Support for further assistance or visiting an Authorized Service Center.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance or if any of these steps help resolve the issue.

Best regards,
Jwes_Lenovo
