Putting old boot drive in new E540

2019-05-01, 15:35 PM

I want to replace my Lenovo E540 I7 w/Windows 7 with an identical E540 but used and  put the orgininal hard drive in the new unit.

Can I insert the hard drive from my old unit, operating system et all, and will the new E540 boot and operate from the old drive?

There are several used on Ebay but all with windows 10.  I just want to remove the harddrive and put my old drive in and hoping its just a tranparent swap and I can be off and running.

Appreciate any tips you can offer.  Thanks!

Hello rkruz,

Unfortunately no the Win7 OS on the old system drive is assigned to the OEM retail license within the E540 motherboard's BIOS.

But all user files and folders can be accessed and move form the new computer's system drive by a USB device.

Best yet would be to run Windows backup image to USB external hard drive than restore on new computer.

I understand. A couple of questions.
1 ) When I restore then the programs would all work without having to reinstall?
2) Would the programs restore into Windows 10 from the backup? Then I can get a new state of the art laptop.
3) Would TrueImage image backup do the same thing or do I need to use windows backup image?
Thank you again for the help!

Q: When I restore then the programs would all work without having to reinstall?

A: No not all.

O: Would the programs restore into Windows 10 from the backup?

A:  Going from Win7 to Win10 somethings may need to be setup/reinstalled even after the restore.

Q: Would True Image image backup do the same thing or do I need to use windows backup image?

A: Acronis or Microst's, whichever one you like or most comfortable with.
