Replacements, Upgrades and Issues for E540

2018-10-22, 21:08 PM

I have a E540 20C600AAUS.

Battery:
The battery that came with my laptop is FRU p/n 45n1043. When i start my laptop for the first time it show the image below.

I will like to buy a battery that will not display the image above.
I want to replace my battery since it not working at the moment. Which of these will be the best for my laptop 45N1045, 45N1049, 45N1053, 45N1055?
If i change my battery will this mean i have to change my AC adpater? Will my new battery work with my AC adpater? My AC adpater is 45N0256

Hard drive:
I want a hard drive with the following specs 500GB, 7200rpm and 32cache. Can the size of the cache cause problems like hard drive failure or something else? The one i had failed and don't want it to happen again anytime soon with this new one. I am looking to buy 04X4171, 00HM591 or 00HM586.

Can these work with my laptop?

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Laptop-7200RPM-Cache-ST500LM021/dp/B00ISKS416?th=1

RAM:
The low voltage version of SODIMM memory work with the motherbroad? Is it possible not to use low voltage version of SODIMM memory with my laptop?
https://www.amazon.com/Axiom-DDR3L-1600-Voltage-0B47381-0B47381-AX/dp/B00DSUHONU

CPU:
If i change the cpu will i able to change my intel grahpic 4600 in device manager with add legacy hardware

GPU:
Is it possible to add a GPU to my laptop? I have 04X4781 motherbroad. Do i have a motherbroad/system broad for a Discrete graphic card?
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/Replacing-GPU-grpahics-in-E540/td-p/2071866
The link above said "Yes, you can upgrade it to “Discrete graphics card”, but for that you have to replace the system board, only then you can get the dedicated graphics card."

These show Discrete graphics card in E540 and a spot where i think a Discrete graphics card can be added/soldered on.

I also have the same spot on the system broad.

Most of the people want to know it then my suggestion is that you just use an application which is related with the Lenovo team. For further about it, epson error code 0xf1 just visit with it.

Battery:

Those part numbers are for the same batterry. The different numbers identify who manufactured the battery.

Make sure you buy a genuine Lenovo battery. Otherwise the battery may not work, may produce messages like the one you posted and/or may not be safe.

Changing the battery won't affect the AC charger.

Hard drive:

Cache size has no effect on HDD longevity. A larger cache will improve performance, but only slightly.

If you want to make a real improvement in performance consider replacing the HDD with a solid state disk (SSD.) Prices have come down dramatically in recent months.

RAM:

Your model came with 4GB of DDR3 low voltage RAM so yes, you can add a DDR3L SODIMM.

CPU/GPU:

I'm no expert on this but you'd probably have to replace the motherboard. This is expensive, especially if you buy a new one from Lenovo. It's also a big job to replace it. It's not something I'd want to tackle. And soldering chips to the motherboard is something that requires very specialized equipment with a skilled person doing the procedure. Perhaps someone with more experience on this issue can weigh in.

Battery

The batteries are different i think. They are 2.2Ah and 2.8Ah

Where to find the numbers that identify who manufactured the battery?

I though it have specific AC adapter for specific battery.

Hard drive

Don't it have a down side to SSD? i will be using my laptop everyday. I don't see a 500GB one for my laptop.

HHD last longer right?

Can i have both work with my laptop?

Ram

My laptop came with 4GB DDR3L 1600 SODIMM. 03X6656.

Do i have to keep using low voltage version of SODIMM memory with my laptop? Or can i use others (cheaper ones)?

Re: Replacements, Upgrades and Issues for E540

Battery:

Here's the parts list for the E540. The manufacturers are shown in the description. The first three batteries are 6-cell 2.2A and the last two are 6-cell 2.8A. The latter have greater capacity on a single charge. The E540 specifications say, "6-cell (48Whr): up to 6.2 hr 6-cell (62Whr): up to 7.4 hr "

Hard Drive:

SSDs are more durable and more resistant to rough handling (e.g. bumps and drops) than HDDs because they have no moving parts. Early SSDs were prone to premature failure, however, modern ones are more reliable than HDDs.

There is a 2.5" drive bay that can hold either an HDD or SSD. In addition there is an M.2 slot that can hold an SSD. So yes you can run both types of drives in your E540.

RAM:

The specifications say, "16GB max / PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L, non-parity, dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets" so you should stay with low voltage modules.

Thank you for the links, where did u get http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20E540/ThinkPad_E540_Platform_Specifications.pdf from?

Battery:

which one of those is a genuine Lenovo battery?

Hard drive:

Use SSD for performance and HDD for storage?

If i try the above what will i have to store on the SSD(M.2 slot)?

Ram:

Ok i will stay with the low voltage ones.

To use the dual-channel capable do the slots for the ram have to be the same 4 GB or 8 GB on each slot.

Thanks alot dude :)

where did u get

It's from Lenovo's official Product Specifications Reference (PSREF) website.

which one of those is a genuine Lenovo battery?

Those are part numbers. Lenovo buys batteries from several manufacturers, including Simplo, Sanyo and LG. If you want to ensure that the battery is genuine then buy it from Lenovo or an authorized dealer. Avoid buying batteries on Amazon and especially eBay because they're often remanufactured or outright fakes.

> Use SSD for performance and HDD for storage? If i try the above what will i have to store on the SSD(M.2 slot)?

You should put the operating system and applications on the SSD, with data on the HDD. Make the SSD the boot drive. If you have data that's frequently accessed, e.g. an active database, then it should go on the SSD if it will fit.

To use the dual-channel capable do the slots for the ram have to be the same 4 GB or 8 GB on each slot.

Ideally the two modules should be identical. If you mix 4GB and 8GB they'll still work, but at very slightly reduced performance.

battery:

Thx i will buy the 2.8Ah from lenovo.

How to find authorized dealer?

hard drive:

I want a SSD M.2 with 250 GB or more, u think that possible?

On the ThinkPad E540 Platform Specifications link i see none by the M.2 SSD.

I am thinking to put games and operating system on the SSD and other applications on the HDD?

Re the battery, your profile says VC (St Vincent and the Grenadines?) Lenovo doesn't seem to have a presence there but I did find this via Google: Mavcom. There may be other sources in the area or maybe you can buy from the US/UK?

Re the M.2 SSD, further down the PSREF page under "M.2 Card" it says, "One M.2 Card slot for support of SSD." This assumes that this slot isn't already used for a WWAN card. Also there are two types of M.2 cards, SATA and NVMe. The E540 supports only SATA. Here's a listing on Amazon for a 250GB drive: Samsung 850 EVO - 250GB - M.2 SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-N5E250BW).
