Betreff: [Request] Please make E530 fully ACPI compliant to allow fan control

2013-06-07, 23:20 PM

Quote from: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Reference/ACPITricksAndTips

"Generally, most Embedded Controllers share common features in their memory locations, with minor vendor specific changes from machine to machine. Hence most Lenovos share the same basic functionality mappings onto the EC memory, which enables one to figure out which memory location may be used for specific features. Since these fields are proprietary there is scant documentation and a lot of the debugging at this level is down to intelligent guesswork and reverse engineering the AML methods to figure out what how the EC works."

well, seems like in the E530 the functionality mappings are a lot different from the standard lenovo design.

Please change that.

And again I am answering my own posts... *sigh*

another good (old) source on the problem:

HOWTO: Fix Common ACPI Problems (DSDT, ECDT, etc.)

Here is a quote that seems to apply to our problem:

"Ideally, we could each convince our favorite purveyor of laptops to fix their DSDTs. That's a good idea, but while we're waiting for hell to freeze over, we can implement a workaround to fix our DSDTs ourselves, and provide the fixed DSDT to the linux kernel, making it content, perhaps even happy.*

In addition to the DSDT, laptops that conform to the ACPI 2.0 specification may provide an ECDT. This is a small table that provides minimal information about the Embedded Controller to the ACPI drivers before this section is parsed from the DSDT. This is necessary to prevent some chicken and egg type problems with initializing devices (such as the battery and ac adapter in some systems) that rely on the Embedded Controller. Sadly, again, some laptops that should provide an ECDT do not. So, to get around this, we'll have to patch the kernel to read the necessary information from the DSDT."

Obviously, on the E530 the DSDT is used to figure out the EC Configuration. dmesg shows:

[ 0.226659] ACPI: EC: Look up EC in DSDT
[ 0.228181] ACPI: Executed 1 blocks of module-level executable AML code
[ 0.230766] [Firmware Bug]: ACPI: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored
...
[ 1.210261] ACPI: EC: GPE = 0x17, I/O: command/status = 0x66, data = 0x62
...
[ 17.182678] thinkpad_acpi: ThinkPad BIOS H0ET92WW (2.52 ), EC unknown

Does that mean, the information about adressing the fan could be obtained from the DSDT instead of the ECDT, which should do the job, when the BIOS is compliant to ACPI-standards?

WhinyFan, I love your rudeness! You are perfectly right!

I'm tired to beg lenovo and wait.

Is there anybody from lenovo stuff who is reading this thread?

What are you doing? Hiding from your customers?

Please, try to google "lenovo thinkpad edge e430 problems", this very forum is on the first page for a new potential customers!!!!

... until hell freezes over.

I don't think Lenovo gives a dropping, kot, exkrement about any E530 user any more. They have already moved on to generating more revenue from selling faulty laptops with cheap and buggy programmed BIOSES and a loud and annoying cooling system.

I end up completely with Lenovo, after I install resistor to my loud fan, that never stops! It was unbearable when I was working at nights (typing texts, programming).

With resistor the behavior is tolerable, but I will hate Lenovo forever, after using many their laptops...

God, I hate Lenovo as much as you do! For years now our problem is not solved!

Never, NEVER will I buy any kind of Lenovo devices and I will strongly recommend others not to do it!

Nasaal, would you be so kind to provide us with resistor specification?

I would recommend 22 Ohm resistor (0,5 W is ok), after some tests I've made. It should be bundled in the laptop's original package;)

Never buy Lenovo again!

Full ack! Have an E530 and E531... the quality is decreasing (from poor to very poor). The E520 was the last one which was worth its money. My opinion  ( they already delete my comments due to the fact that i criticize Lenovo.... )
