I have the same exact problem, except that I'm running the windows 7 that was preinstalled.
The trackpad has too much friction to be used comfortably, my finger hangs up on it - so I wanted to use the trackpoint, which I like. Unfortunately, that's also a pain in the behind because of having to mechanically press down that LOUD flimsy piece of ......... . To be more precise, it's not the pressing down that's loud, but the release.
It makes using the computer without an external mouse a frustrating experience - and thus the functionality of this LAPTOP is greatly reduced. It feels like I'm using some low-quality flimsy crap, which is exactly what I wanted to avoid when I ordered a thinkpad. The keyboard is also on the loud end by the way (and for some reason the right side of the spacebar is significantly louder than the left).
I wonder what on earth the Lenovo people were thinking when they designed and implemented this. Saving money? Incompetent people in suits making the decisions? The trackpad seems like a poor imitation of the trackpad on a Macbook, which can also be a bit loud but not as much, and atleast the friction on that is low enough so that the cursor movement isn't choppy. Could it be that it will "settle" with use?
If only I could tap to click when using the trackpoint, I wouldn't complain because in that case I could actually use this setup comfortably despite the flaws. As it stands, I'm left disappointed. It's a shame, because I'm pretty happy with the computer elsewise, and I want to keep using thinkpads. The companies that actually make Windows-computers that are high-quality without a bunch of stupid gimmicks are few and far between.
I'm sorry if this critique is too harsh. It's honest though :-)
Edit: After doing some searching, I've realized that this issue is all over this forum, for several thinkpad models. That Lenovo has still not fixed this is mind-boggling.

So the new design is abandoned because Lenovo realized it's no good. What they should do is offer free trackpad replacements, yet they don't even bother to implement a software fix for what they know has poor functionality. What an insult. This e540 is barely a week old, I will probably return it unless this is fixed very soon.
