ThinkPad E485 20KU - Extreme AMD Video Driver Issues Frequent BSOD

2019-07-28, 6:11 AM

I don't really know where to begin except that I'm ready to throw my laptop out with the trash next week. Aside from the lack of an illuminated keyboard, I really love the E485 when it works. Fast to boot, fast to load apps, comfortable to type and work on. However, it's clear that the AMD chipset sucks in this machine.

It's rare that I can get through a full day without a BSOD, and it's more often that I'll experience 4-5 in an hour depending on what I'm doing. I actually got one after a reboot while sitting on the Lenovo Vantage screen. Although there are a few different messages that come with it, typically I'm getting VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (atikmpag.sys) or VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR.

Before I get too far into this story, know that I've received it from the first day I owned this thing. Went through all the setup/welcome screens, hopped online for a bit, and BAM! the first one appeared. Lenovo Vantage and Windows Update show all driver/updates are installed and current. That said, I've tried it with a clean install using the Lenovo partition, using the downloadable recovery media, actually trying to install the AMD update for Radeon/Ryzen, which is an entire release later than Lenovo and allows for higher resolutions on external monitors... Depending on the version, that gets even worse and more frequent. So while AMD has released 19.x, Lenovo sits on 18.x -- but it doesn't really matter.

I bought a ThinkPad because I'd always had such great luck with them, especially as a business laptop. I can't trust it to stay on longer than 30 minutes now, so it's more of a paperweight than anything else.

I did opt for a custom build, putting in the AMD Ryzen 7 2700u w/Vega 10 mobile graphics and the 14.0" FHD 1920x1080 screen.

Vega 10 Driver: 25.20.14012.9002 (2/21/2019)
Radeon System Driver: 18.40.12.09
Radeon Software Edition: Adrenalin
BIOS: R0UET73W 1.53
Windows 10 Pro, Version 1903, OS Build 18362.267

I honestly don't know where to go next. If I could return this thing, I would, but it's been about 4 months.

Re: ThinkPad E485 20KU - Extreme AMD Video Driver Issues Frequent BSOD

How unfortunate.  I haven't had any such issues with my E585 and the only ones I've read about (but seem to have been dealt with or worked around) in the Ryzen family were related to throttling/performance, keyboard/input and non-Windows compatibility.

Yours definitely sounds like a hardware problem so I'd advise taking advantage of your one year warranty to get it fixed or replaced. Don't throw it out just four months in.

Re: ThinkPad E485 20KU - Extreme AMD Video Driver Issues Frequent BSOD

2019-08-04, 7:17 AM

Okay, I think that I might have figured it out. Since Day One, I had upgraded my memory to 16 GB with a Patriot Viper SODIMM. Last week, I boosted that to 32 GB (2x16).

Given the nature of the errors and file references, it never really dawned on me that the RAM could be the source of my troubles. I just kept assuming that it was a Lenovo/AMD/Ryzen/Video/Win10 driver dilemma.

I decided that if I was going to deal with Lenovo support, it would be best to reset everything to factory. But I was curious, so as I yanked out my NVMe and replaced the factory HDD, I left the RAM in place. After a long install process, I stress tested the laptop until it failed again.

Thinking it could be the RAM (as it's not the only non-OEM part left), I pulled it and replaced with the original 4GB. OMG, it was painful but nothing ever crashed. Not once. So I swapped out with two Samsung 4GB sticks I had pulled from a few Ideapad 330 units... No issue so far, and I've been running about 48 hours now.

Pretty sure the issue is incompatible Patriot Viper memory. Granted, if you read their website they seem to only say it works with Intel (no mention of AMD). So, that's on me... but fingers crossed the ram was the issue and I'll just step back and go with Crucial, which offers a guarantee to work in the E485.

This helped me too

Thanks for updating us with the solution. It would help to mark your preceding post as the solution as well.

There was another user recently who was having boot problems that turned out to be caused by aftermarket RAM compatibility, so it might help others looking to buy a lower RAM configuration and upgrade it themselves.

I wasn't the one to mark this as the answer, and the reason why is that I wanted to hear back from Patriot before I ruled out their memory.

After another round of swapping and testing, it seems that the original SODIMM that I purchased was the real culprit. I have tested a few days with the Crucial 16GB kit (2x8) as well as the Samsung 8GB (2x4) that I pieced together from old Ideapad stock RAM. Both work flawlessly.

I realized that I hadn't tried the second stick of Patriot Viper on its own, so I pulled what I had installed and replaced it with a single 16GB stick of Viper PC4-19200 and it's working just fine after two days. That included 3 tabs of 1080p YouTube videos while playing Candy Crush and letting the splash screens for the AMD Radeon and Lenovo Vantage apps run (sure they were a bit jumpy, but no BSOD).

In the end, I think it was the original stick of Viper RAM, which they are willing to replace under warranty exchange.

You know there is memory test in diagnostic bios. You can see if it catches the errors. It should be much more intensive test.

Re: ThinkPad E485 20KU - Extreme AMD Video Driver Issues Frequent BSOD

Ran it numerous times and it never triggers an error. It's why I never suspected the RAM as the source of the issue and always chalked it up to a driver mismatch between ThinkPad BIOS, Win10, and the ATI kit (especially since the ATI drivers were always the BSOD error).

But I've not had three different brand sets of SODIMM installed and not changed anything else, no issues. One stick of the Patriot Viper (installed as I type this) seems to be fine. It seems only reasonable that the other is the source of the issue.

It is strange as memtest should find any problems with memory. You can also try prime95 for stressing memory.

By the way, I have e495 with 3500u and bought 32GB Kingston HX424S14IBK2/32 CL14 dual-rank kit and works fine so far. Also I read dual rank modules perform slightly better with ryzen processors.
