2011-10-29, 20:28 PM

I havte just ordered a ThinkPad E520 and want to use the express card slot with a firewire adapter and a usb 3 adapter. Wil this be a problem?

-can I buy any kind of adapter on Ebay for example or do I need a certain kind with special specs?

-what other kind of problems can I expect ? Please suggest solutions - lol.

It should work just fine. Make sure the ExpressCard fits your slot though; not sure if the E520 has a 34 or 54 sized slot.

Thanks for reply, thought I'd go with one more quick question.

I want to use a 640 GB hard disc I have in an enclosure for backup.  Would you recommend a usb 3 (connected to the express card slot) or an eSata connection direct to the laptop?

Any recomendations for disc enclosure and/or express card adapter or won't go out on a limb or not allowed to do that maybe?

USB Super Speed (USB 3.0) - 625 MB/s (through ExpressCard it get's down to 600 MB/s)

eSATA (SATA 300) - 300 MB/s

USB Hi-Speed (USB 2.0)- 60 MB/s

AFAIR (can be off by a year or two, max 20-30MB/s difference)

Fastest 2,5 HDD should achieve max read speed of about 125 MB/s

Fastest 3,5 HDD should achieve max read speed of about 160 MB/s

So as you can see both USB 3.0 and eSATA should be more than enough.

Note that the provided figures are theoretical maximums.

eSATA has been shown to be faster than USB 3.0 in practice.
