ThinkPad E560 20EV - Still waiting for Windows 10 Version 2004 update (20H2 as since been released!)

2021-01-23, 23:10 PM

When will / how is it be possible to access the Windows 10 version 2004 update?

I have the ThinkPad E560 type 20EV currently with Windows 10 Home 64 bit version 1909 installed.  I regularly use the Lenovo 'System Update' software, installing all driver and firmware updates.

It's now Jan 2021 and the next Windows 10 version 20H2 has been available for a while so something seems strange as to why the old version can't be installed?

Here's a screenshot of the Windows 10 Settings menu showing the problem (been like that for several months):

Hi,

You can download the MS Update Assistant and manually update it. I had to do that on 3 machines.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

This will put the latest 20H2 update on.

Dave

Thanks for your reply and a way to get around it.

The thing is the Windows 10 update message states that the version 2004 update will be available once the update is ready for the device, therefore suggesting to the user that it's not ready for the device yet.  Seem strange why it's taking so long to become ready.  Why might that be?

I guess it's possible that Windows is safe to upgrade and it's just some bug that has not triggered the message to change.

On the other side, maybe there could be a really important valid reason why it should not be installed on the laptop model?

eg, known system stability issues, compatibility issues, etc.  I don't know.

Is there a way to find out the reason why Windows is not ready for the ThinkPad E560 20EV yet and will it ever be?

Maybe someone already knows?

Would forcing a Windows upgrade carry risks?

However by not forcing a Windows upgrade carry greater risks eg important bug fixes, security updates, etc?

MP99, apparently the problem is the Conexant audio driver. Conexant is out of business and there is no source code available for the drivers (to work from for updating). So Lenovo and MicroSoft need to work together to code new drivers from scratch. See this thread: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and-Edge-series-Laptops/Will-the-E560-be-qualified-for-the-Win-10-2004-update-which-was-issued-5-months-ago/m-p/5044526, where someone from Lenovo explains the problem.

I, too, am getting really tired of waiting for this, especially with the 1909 version of Win10 I running soon going out of support.
