Thinkpad E14 Gen 2 AMD freezes

2020-11-28, 22:18 PM

When using my E14 the display irregularily freezes and there is no way to get it back working. I have to do a hard reset to be able to boot again. The sound continues playing and the network seems to be working on. Sorry for this little information but it is really annoying as it happens mostly once a day. I am running Manjaro Linux with Kernel 5.9.11

Any comments are appreciated.

It just happened again, here is the journalctl output. Would be great if someone could search for any hint, I have not found anything.

Re:Thinkpad E14 Gen 2 AMD freezes

2021-01-12, 7:05 AM

I am facing exactly the same problem with Kubuntu 20.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad E14 (AMD), using Kernel 5.9.6-050906-lowlatency.

I was hoping that the issue could be solved by upgrading to Kubuntu 20.10 but now this seems to be independent of the distro.

I assume you posted this question here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/625668/thinkpad-e14-gen-2-amd-display-freeze/628601#628601

I was trying to answer there first but my answer was deleted by the moderators.

You mentioned a BIOS upgrade to 1.09. Did that help?

Re:Thinkpad E14 Gen 2 AMD freezes

Thank you very much for your answer!

I only used Manjaro on this device with multiple kernels (now on 5.10.2-2-MANJARO) however I did not try another distro yet. But if you are also experiencing this it really just might be distro independent.

I upgraded the Bios to 1.09 and thought everything was gone but then after ca. 4 days of flawless operation the freezes just came back. Now it happens almost always two times a day, sometimes up to 4 time, seldom never a day.

I still do not have a clue what causes this crashes. I could not notice anything strange in the journalctl log. I fear that it is just a misproduction of our models.

One question. Have you encrypted your system? I chose to encrypt my disk during install, that's the only difference there could be to all people in the fn-keys thread that do not seem to experience the same issues.

I haven't encrypted my system. The freezes seem to appear really randomly: sometimes my laptop works fine for days or even weeks.
While I can't remember exactly, I think most (or even all) of the freezes occurred during Cisco Webex calls (using chromium web browser). I was still able to keep talking and listening to the others, just as you described.
