Thinkpad E480 External Monitor Capabilities

2019-08-24, 4:43 AM

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to purchase a external monitor to do some photo editing on, and connecting it to either of the ports avaliable to the E480. That is a USB-C Type 3.1 and HDMI 1.4. The crucial requirment is 10-bit colour support and 2k/4k resoultion. Can either of these ports be able to provide these requirments? Or can I connect a dock (such as the thuderbolt dock gen 2) to be able to produce the colours and resoultion I want?

I believe the HDMI 1.4 can support 4k @30hz, and 2k @60hz. But i am unsure if high bit colour support is possible. Is this correct?

Re: Thinkpad E480 External Monitor Capabilities

Hi Danz1! Welcome to our forums community.

According the the product reference: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_E480, the laptop supports eternal displays through the USB-C or HDMI port wiht a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080(HDMI) at 60 Hz. And also, the model variants can only have 220-250 nits which is a non HDR display.

There is no only one model of docking station compatible to this device which is the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Pro Dock (American Standard Plug): https://accessorysmartfind.lenovo.com/#/products/40A70045US.

Hope that helps.

What you get is an error message. According to the ThinkPad E480 official manual information, when the E480 uses Type-C interface output and is in dual-monitor mode, the maximum resolution is 1920 * 1080 / 60Hz, but you can set it in Windows only. The second screen output, so you can get the maximum 3840 x 2160 resolution and 60Hz refresh rate.

Attach page 26 of ThinkPad E480 User Manual:

Your computer supports the following video resolution, if the external display also supports that resolution.

• Up to 4096 x 2160 pixels / 30 Hz, with an external display connected to the HDMI connector

• Up to 3840 x 2160 pixels / 60 Hz, with an external display connected to the USB-C connector

In summary, I recommend to you Belkin USB-C to HDMI Adapter (Supports 4K @ 60Hz, HDMI to USB-C Adapter, USB Type-C to HDMI Adapter)

This Type-C to HDMI converter.

Of course, I also saw some ThinkPad E480 users in the community that they can only reach 3840 x 2160 resolution and 60Hz refresh rate through the HDMI interface. That ’s because ThinkPad E480 series is equipped with HDMI 1.4 interface. 2160 resolution and 60Hz refresh rate, please use Type-C to HDMI 2.0 converter.

Or you can buy a monitor with Type-C interface directly, so you can get 3840 x 2160 resolution and 60Hz refresh rate without a converter.

If you are interested, you can go to the Intel Product Specifications website to check the Intel processor information. The Intel Core i3-7020U used in the lowest model of the ThinkPad E480 can perfectly support 4096x2304 resolution and 60Hz refresh rate.
