Can I ask if anyone has managed to obtain a refund or replacement of a different model?

Hi Andy.  I too am having the same issue as the other people in this forum.  I have an e480.  Any updates on the issue?  I downgraded to 1.13, but would rather not, as the newest bios really helped with idle fan noise, but the dedicated gpu still freaked out during any gaming session, after about 10 minutes.  Something is definitely not right.  Hopefully you guys are getting closer to fixing this problem.

Re: Thinkpad E580 - Radeon RX 550 performance issue

Journalists mentioned us:

https://www.notebookcheck.net/ThinkPad-E480-i5-8250U-RX-550-Laptop-Review.280524.0.html

Cite: Update BIOS 1.14: The performance reduction in the synthetic benchmarks is translated to the real-world gaming tests as well. While the E480 originally managed smooth 73.5 FPS in Bioshock Infinite (High setting), the value is now just 21.9 FPS after the update. This is once again just slightly ahead of the iGPU. (EndCite)

So - if anybody thinks that the problem could be muted or even solved by giving permanent bans (ttsoftt) and wiping technical no-offensive posts from two other users from this comunity, he is positively wrong.

Only possible solution i can see is to stop selling E480/490/580/590 in RX550 configuration immediatelly, and refund users who already bought that "experiment". After all - i really think E580 without RX550 is well done "price/earnings".

I am in doubts how long will this post survive. So - i want to tell you good bye, Patt0 specially, it was nice to meet you.

Thank you for sharing this useful review which supports our findings.

What makes me worried now is the face that Lenovo engineers must have knew this issue right after they developed the new BIOS feature, and the fact the they turned a blind eye to it is because SKUs are the least percentage of these models' sales and it would take you so many long to blame lenovo for the bad performance than to blame her for overheating which will directly accuse her of bad design :)

I hope they give us the options to disable the thermal management feature from BIOS even on our responsibility and even if they will not support this feature disabling.

And I hope this reply will not be removed.... again :)

Lenovo updated their AMD driver and i couldn't check it if performance problem still exists but I experienced nonstop fan noise from the GPU. After checking the issue, i think they set it with "high performance" for all programs within the AMD software to overcome this problem.

If FPS problem is fixed now, then we might have another problem which is constant fan noise.

The new AMD driver didn't solve FPS issue, and according to my analysis to this issue we will have to reach a situation of choosing between bad performance and fan noise + high temperature

I hope for a scenario when they make a software switch from OS not from BIOS that we can switch between thermal/fan noise level management and high performance, then Lenovo would put all kinda disclaimers and get the bad design outta her shoulders and customers would be happy to feel they have a choice

Re: Thinkpad E580 - Radeon RX 550 performance issue

Hi guys (and girls if any). I´ve found and tested a solution. No throtlling, full GPU load, no overheating, and even low noise - but... litlle over 25E and 300g+.

At first a little theory: the problem we have is - energy. I am guessing: to get E580 to work needs cca 25W input, full performance needs input - how much? 85W or more? i5-8250 I have can boost from 15 to 45W, and RX550 is another well known energy swallower :-) And all this energy changes to heat loss - so our E580s are pretty stoves. And if we want full time full performance, there is IMHO no software bypass solution; no drivers, no system, and even no BIOS feature can help us (so please, Lenovo, remove that terrible 1.14+ BIOS throttling, or, better, make it scalable/optional). Only possible i see is - take the heat out of computer. Lenovo apparently didnot calculate this thoroughly.

My solution, and IMHO only possible is - to buy external cooling. Seems weird, but - and even I was surprised - it works. I used something which is tagged NS2000 (cause it is big slow fan, scalable speed, so much more quieter than internal fan, and has no "Las Vegas effect"), measured temperature on chip with techpowerup SW - there was almost 10°C decrease, in room temperature 22-23°C I havent exceeded 72°C on GPU chip, which is throtling trigger. And even internal fan lowers rotation speed and makes less noise. Must concede - i still use 1.13 BIOS, but with 72°C i am fully satisfied. As told in some forum - put it in refridgerator, and this would be the best NB you´ve already bought.
