Betreff: Thinkpad Edge 13 with Corsair F120 SSD

Here is my solution wihout modifying the Thinkpad and thus not having to worry about warrenty or breaking anything :)

The piece of plastic was in the way for my SSD as described in this thread. Nonetheless, the SSD was in far enough to have sufficient contact with the connecting pins. The only problem left was securing the SSD so that it would not loose contact. Since the bore hole of the cage was not aligned anymore, screwing the cage was out of the question. What I did was to find some material to stuff behind the SSD so that it wouldn't budge. Done, problem solved. For anyone else wanting to try this, I would recommend to use some material that is heat resistent, does not conduct electricity and which does not loose its form.

My SSD is a 128GB Crucial m4 which I chose for its very low power consumption and its official compatibility with the Thinkpad Edge 13 ;) I have read about problems with this SSD, but that was supposedly before the latest firmware update. After one Week of use, I have not encountered any problems with my SSD and Ubuntu is up and running on my Thinkpad Edge 13 without any noticible limitations.

Hi,

According to their website, the F120 is 5V.

Edit: BTW, the other drive I tried (platter drive) was also 5V. A Seagate 7200.4 320 GB.

I've tried this with no further success. Booted the computer several times while just pushing the drive as far in as I could (maybe 1-1,5 mm space between the drive connector and the laptop's SATA connector) but with no luck. Tried the same with a platter based drive and that worked just fine. So I really don't know what makes this drive incompatible with my Edge model.

Carestad,

Jamez was good enought to try this out on an Edge 14 that he has access to and put in his own OCZ drive to see whether it would be recognized.  The mechanical fit did not allow the metal tray from the rotating media drive to be retained.  I don't know if a number of SSD drive manufacturers are making the drives physically larger or what.

Here is a shot of it shown in BIOS - definitely seen by the system.   We note that the Edge 13 has a different bios than the 14 or 15 so we need to find a 13 to take the next step.

You could always drop by my place when in Norway anytime soon :smileywink:

I sort of thought you guys had a huge stock with every type and model of Lenovo products you could test on? Or maybe it was just in my dreams... :smileytongue:

My firm recently got merged with InfoCare here in Norway and after what I've learned, they handle the onsite support for Lenovo products. I most certainly will ask some of the technicians there if they happen to know anything about this or have any ideas/tricks.

I will of course keep you posted here if anything comes up.

BTW, I got sick and tired of waiting for something to happen with this so I just bought a Intel 320 120 GB SSD and this works just fine :)

If anything should happen thoug, do not hesitate to reply.

I'm guessing that maybe the BiOS for the 13" models might have an issue and I can't see why the 14" and 15" gets a BiOS update because of some problems with the multimedia keys and the 13" doesn't (cause I've had problems with the multimedia keys as well).
