Try the following older synaptics driver : Synaptics_Driver_v10_1_8_Vista64 (make a google search to find it). It does not support multitouch gestures. But at least it works without  any hazzle on my windows7 prof machine.  Before i used this driver i tried the generic synaptics driver as recommended here - no real improvement. After that I completely removed the driver and used the generic microsoft pointing device driver delivered with windows 7. At least the permanent pointer freeze disappeared. But best results I achieved with the old 10.1.8 driver.

He folks from Lenovo: you risk your reputation with that annoying touchpad+ driver!!. I really considered turning back this "thinkpad" device to my dealer and use my old R40 until it dies. Read also this review http://www.thevarguy.com/2010/03/15/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-review/ . It is really the worst touchpad ever!

JameZ's suggestion definitely helped with my scrolling problem (on my Edge 11), both one and two finger. HOWEVER, touchpad still loses responsiveness occasionally. totally random tho! when it freezes, all buttons and trackpoint still work, but i noticed yesterday that the keyboard stopped working simulataneously.

I'm a new user of Thinkpad Edge. In fact i just receive my portable yesterday to be precise lol.

First i want to say i choose lenovo thinkpad though i'm not a pro. I consider myself like a casual user.

But i choose just because i heard so much compliment about the comfort of the keyboard.

Now after one full day of use ( i have a Thinkpad edge 13 from france with driver 15.0.18.0) i'm very disappoint about the touchpad :(

I never thought how much is important an accurate touchpad until now. With this touchpad i feel like my laptop is slow and i just buy it. It's ard to explain but i focus my concentration too much on the cursor because of that. I never sure about my gesture. I really hope this can be fixed because i don't like the idea to have a exernal mouse with a laptop.

I used to love touchpad until today.

The Keyboard is godlike though !!!

Now i end my feedback here and i want to add some informations i noticed :

When i was looking in the preferences i saw sometimes i press the touchpad right in the middle but the touchpad recognize my input like if it was on the right edge (arrow and yellow color)  !!!.

It's happened to me several times so perhaps that can help.

PS : i unchecked "Scrolling Region Filtering" but i didn't try yet to uninstall those drivers

I just received my ThinkPad Edge 15 0301-DCU yesterday, and the touchpad does not work at all. I cannot get a cursor to appear on the screen. The point device works fine.

I've read thru all the posts in this thread and tried making adjustments to the Ultranav settings, updating the driver, etc. Nothing has worked.

What else should I try?

I work for IBM and have had three Thinkpads for work. Let me just say that the touchpads on my other thinkpads (T30, T42p, and T400) were excellent. My girlfriends Ideapad U460 touchpad is also excellent.

I just got my EDGE 14 for personal use a few days ago. Touchpad has been a HORRIBLE. (0578-XF9 using Windows 7 32 bit.).    I have been searching forums and boards all over the place and tried so many different combinations of settings to get my touchpad to get to the level of my other Lenovo machines.

Among the many problems I have had.

-Cursor would move to a different part of the screen for no reason

-Cursor would freeze if touchpad wasn't used for a few minutes and I have to tap the touch pad really hard or rub it to get it to move again.

-General scrolling seemed to behave differently in different applications. Sometimes ok other times choppy or jumpy. It always works fine in the touchpad practice demo application, but was very inconsistent and terrible with itunes.

-Horizontal scrolling was unbearably slow. 

-Three finger flick was very inconsistent

-Pinch zoom was very inconsistent

-Scrolling in itunes didn't work

-Two finger scroll was inconsistent. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't work at all, or would be very choppy.

-The Rotate gesture would almost never work.

1. How long has the machine been turned on before the issue started to happen? Issues happen randomly. Cursor freezing happens alot after resume from sleep mode. But it can happen any time.
2. What were you doing or what programs were running before the issue happened? Touchpad freezes for all programs. Scrolling problems are inconsistent in all, but really bad in itunes.
3. How you temporarily fix it? By system reboot? FOr cursor freezing, had to rub or tap the touchpad and wait a few seconds before it started responding again. For the itunes problem, I had to edit a configuration file in the original touchpad program directory (tp4table.dat)  

NOte: I just installed the synaptics driver from the synaptics website (version 14.0.3.0). Hopefully, it solves some of the problems. I will write back if it does help.

Personally, I think it is a hardware issue.
