I experienced similar issues with a E420s (Intel i5). Purely random. Looked kind of software related.

But I don't own it anymore.

Ever since I updated to Synaptics UltraNav Driver v16.2.14.0, my settings will not save between reboots.  I disable the Touchpad and just use the Touchstick.  Both are enabled with all settings lost on every reboot.  I have a ThinkPad Edge E420.

We need a new driver/software package from Synaptics as soon as possible.  My problem is not a hardware problem!

Reverted back to Synaptics UltraNav Driver v16.2.5.0 and all is well with my system.  The settings now hold during reboot.

Re: Touchpad Still not working

2012-12-21, 0:37 AM

I have tried every solution suggested in the 20+ pages of this threaded discussion and nothing seems to get the touchpad or the trackpoint to work.

I have

  1. Thinkpad Edge 15
  2. Machine Type Model 031942U (0301DBU)
  3. Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
  4. BIOS: 80ET62WW (2.02)
  5. CPU: Intel i7
  6. Occasionally the touchpad works for the first 10 minutes after start-up, but usually the mousepad does not work at all.
  7. I have no idea which programs were running when the problem started.
  8. I have not found a temporary fix.  Applying pressure to the touchpad makes no difference.
  9. I have installed several driver versions from both the Lenovo and Synaptcs websites: 14.0.3.0, 16.2.21.0, 16.2.5.0, 16.2.19.2

Each time I install a new driver I begin by removing the old version through Control Panel "Uninstall a program" and then proceed to install the new driver.  Then I shut down the computer and unplug the USB mouse.  When the computer reboots, the touchpad and trackpoint are completely unresponsive.

Also, when I go to Control Panel, then to "Devices and Printers," then to "Mouse"  (or "Mouse Properties"), and then to the "Hardware" tab, when I click on "Synaptics PS/2 Port Pointing Device," the "Device status" reads "This device is working properly." However, when I click on the "Device Settings" tab, no device appears inthe box, so I am unable to "Enable" or "Disable" the device.

Any thoughts? Thank you!

I have had this exact same problem since the last driver update.

Also another problem you may notice. When in programs which have more than one scollable window, the srolling feature using the touchpad doesn't work unless you click inside the window. For example Windows Live Mail. The window that displays email won't scroll using the touchpad until I click inside that particular area. I have reverted and the problem doesn't exist. Updated again and it emerges. So it's definately the driver. Just working around it for now. But really annoying, Can't anyone do things right these days.

Re: Solved all touchpad problems by installing Synaptics reference driver

2013-02-05, 2:57 AM

I bought a Thinkpad Edge E430 in August.  There is this gray and black disc that appears sometimes when scrolling and stops the action.  Sometimes it stutters a little bit.  Does anyone know what this is?

The photo is too large to post.
