Unable to configure fingerprint reader for power on password

2019-12-28, 23:18 PM

The user guide for the e490 says you can use the fingerprint reader to use a fingerprint instead of typing in the password for the power on password. I can get it to work to login to Windows 10, but do not see anywhere I can configure it for the power on password. All the online instructions I have found are wrong. I tried calling support but they were not able to help. Has anyone been able to get this to work?

Hello and welcome,

Do you have a page # where you see that you can use the FPR for a power-on password?  I took a quick scan through the UG and didn't find it.

It was in the user guide that came with the e490s. The file was too big to attach. It can be downloaded from the link below. Instructions are on page 31. The instructions say

Associate your fingerprints with your power-on password and hard disk password

1. Turn off and then turn on the computer.

2. When prompted, scan your finger on the fingerprint reader.

3. Enter your power-on password, hard disk password, or both as required. The connection is created.

I do not get prompted for the fingerprint when I turn on the computer.

I am looking at the BIOS options and I do not see anywhere that references predesktop authentication so I believe there is no support on the "E" series machines

Do you have an E490 or an E490s?  I think the UG I looked at covers both, but perhaps there's a difference.

I can't open your link.  Please just post a link to the document as it sits on the Lenovo support site.

I'm inclined to think that richk is right on this, but I'd like to see your reference.

I have an e490s. I cut out some extra pages on the attached user guide so I could upload it. The instructions are on the last page.

Your link doesn't work.  Would you please just post the URL of the document on the Lenovo site. That way we can be sure we're looking at the same/right document.

The online version did not have anything about using the fingerprint for the power on password. The user guide that came with the machine did. Did the pdf I attached not download?

It throws an error.  At this point given that there's no power-on fingerprint option in BIOS and nothing in the current on-line UG, my guess is that you're out of luck :(

If you want to pursue what seems to be an error in the documentation, all I can think of is a screen grab of the title page and the page in question.

Sorry, but I don't think this is going to lead to what you want.

No use putting up a fight for incorrect documentation. Thanks for all the help. It's too bad that's not a feature on this machine. It was really useful on my old ThinkPad.
