Will a memory upgrade make a difference to speed on my Edge 11?

2011-07-12, 12:47 PM

Hi all,

I have a new Edge 11 with an 1.8 Mhz AMD Athlon(tm) II Neo K145 Processor and 2 GB RAM (currently about 500 MB free physical RAM).

I have upgraded the HD to 500 GB with plenty of space.

However, I am not overly impressed by the system performance.

I sometimes experience sluggish response with the processor not maxing out but the system still hanging around and "doing nothing".

Typically I have a large number of applications open simultaneously.

Question to all you experts:

I can upgrade the RAM to 4 GB. However, before I do so, do you think this will improve the system performance or will I most likely not see a difference?

Many thanks for your pointers!

Robert

I think you would be a good candidate for a ram upgrade.  A ram upgrade is one of the easiest ways to increase the performance of a computer.  I think you would notice a nice performance increase, especially if you're running multiple programs. On a 32bit OS you'll see about 3.3GB available and on a 64bit OS you'll see the full 4GB.

RAM upgrade is always the easiest way to go if you want more speed. Dunno how much exactly does Edge 11 support as MAX, but you should always go for it, since stick of 4 GB DDR3 costs like 50$. You don't have to buy lenovo branded memory, they are really expensive and aren't even made by Lenovo, they just carry a Lenovo sticker. Go for Kingston. I always go overkill on RAM, so I could make a ram drive for TEMP and not worry about having to close some unused 75 firefox tabs and several instances of photoshop.
