8gb memory problem Lenovo Edge 13 AMD (pictures)

[ Editado ]

Issue 1:

I installed 8gb (2x4gb) 1066mhz ram from Corsair in my Edge 13, when I do this it says in

When I look in: Control Panel > System and Security > System > Installed Memory (RAM) > 8gb (3,75gb usable).

So only 4gb is useable and the 256mb is reserved as video ram.

Then I look in Resource Monitor > Memory > There is 4,3gb hardware reserved (so this is all wasted memory)

What I tried:

  • The 8gb is recognized in the BIOS.
  • Checked the RAM with memtest for hours and no errors
  • Lenovo does or did sell this version I have with 8gb ram so should work? (Was on the UK and German site last week can't find it anymore now)
  • Updated the BIOS to latest version 1.11 upgraded from 1.09.
  • Can't find any BIOS settings that might help (Found on a forum you can fix this sometimes with extended memory setting in the BIOS, but BIOS doesn't have this setting)
  • Tried the trick with msconfig > boot > advanced > max memory set to 8192mb, doesn't work. (Also tried with less to account for the video ram)
  • When I put in 1 stick of 4gb ram with the 2gb stick that came standard.  (I did this with both 4gb sticks so no problem there)
  • And then look in: Control Panel > System and Security > System > Installed Memory (RAM) > 6gb (5,75gb usable). So 6gb works find, then there is also only 256mb hardware reserved which is correct for the video ram.

Issue 2:

The ram speed is 1066mhz, but because its DDR to get real speed have to divide by 2 so should be 533mhz. But my ram only runs at 400mhz according to CPU-Z program. Even during benchmarks when CPU runs at highest speed of 1,8ghz (In power save mode CPU runs at 800mhz) ram stays at 400mhz. Is this correct? If anyone with an Edge 13 could post a screenshot of his CPU-Z would be appreciated.

I have this with the original 2gb ram and with the 8gb ram.

Question: is there a way to assign more ram to video ram? Like 512mb. Probably not gonna increase performance much if at all, just curious of its possible.

With 8gb only 3,75 usable.

4,3gb hardware reserved with 8gb Emoticono triste

Is this correct ram only running at 400mhz? Shouldnt it be 533mhz?

.

.

With 6gb the correct amount is hardware reserved for the videoram

You'll need to use 64-bit Windows to take advantage of all 8GB of RAM.

I don't think the allocated amount is adjustable in BIOS, but if you have Windows 7 and the proper drivers, it'll allocate system RAM automatically as well.

Yes I have 64-bit Windows Home premium I even checked if it might be a memory limitation of home premium but that is 16gb. (Because I knew Windows Starter only supports 2gb, and Basic only 4gb)
And 6gb works but not 8gb

Hit Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Boot tab > Advanced Options > Uncheck Maximum Memory if it's checked.

Re: 8gb memory problem Lenovo Edge 13 AMD (pictures)

ISTR quite a few posts mentioning problems with ThinkPads and Corsair memory.  The consensus was that Crucial was a better choice, and perhaps other mfgrs as well.  I don't recall that the symptoms were what you describe - particularly not the massive reserved memory.

I'm not saying that this is a Corsair issue, just that it might be.  Do you have access to some other mfgr's RAM that you can test with?

Re: 8gb memory problem Lenovo Edge 13 AMD (pictures)

@zoltanthegypsy

No, I have no other ram to test with. None of the local hardware stores seem to have 4gb modules at least not on their website, strange.

Installed Ubuntu 64-bit today, with 6gb installed 5,75gb, with 8gb installed 3,75gb. So it isn't an OS issue.

I'm out of ideas, might indeed be compatibility issue, but strange thing is that the 8gb is recognized in the BIOS, Memtest86+.

Re: 8gb memory problem Lenovo Edge 13 AMD (pictures)

Isn't the max installable memory for the Edge 13 AMD, only 4 GB? Maybe this could be why it doesn't work properly?
