Black screen on startup Thinkpad Edge 15 0302

Two days ago my wife's laptop gave up, apparently. On startup the red led lights up and the fan starts. After 10-12 seconds the fan revs up to maximum and stays that way. There's not even a flickering on the screen. I've tried everything I can think of. Connected external display, vga and hdmi and there's nothing on them. Tried to boot to a Windows install DVD but that doesn't work. Tried to remove , reinstall DIMM's. I've had the HDD out and connected to another computer and it seems ok. Checked the LCD connectors and they seem ok too. There's no responsewhen pressing F2 or any other key on startup.

 

Any ideas appreciated!

I’m sorry to hear that there is no display in your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15.

 

I would like to thank you for all the efforts you have done to fix the issue on your own.

 

I suggest you to perform Flee Power as well and check. Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

Hi Per,

 

Try removing the memory, start the system and check if you hear beep sounds. If there is no beep sound, probably it’s a system board issue.

 

Refer hardware maintenance manual to understand how to perform installation and disassembly of hardware components.

I've tried that and there's no sign of life... The plan now is to replace the bios chip on the board.

I doubt replacing the BIOS chip alone would be difficult. You would probably need an entire motherboard replacement since the chip is soldered to the board.

Well, I replaced the BIOS chip... still the same problem. So a new mainboard... but that would cost as much as a new laptop. So it's the trash bin, or sell it as parts on eBay.
