2017-08-18, 13:14 PM

Hello everyone!

Does anybody know how to downgrade Windows 10 Pro to Windows 7 Pro? Where can I get the activation key?

Thank you for your answers! I have Thinkpad E470 with W10Pro preinstalled.

The way I read Understanding downgrade rights is this: you scrounge media, use a '7 key that's already in use somewhere else (to get into the activation process requires a legit key) that fails, and you call the number then provided for activation.  You use an already-in-use key so a new key doesn't get consumed in the process.

Strange, but that's how MS has set things up.  I can report that using a '7 Lenovo OEM key from my T420 for that process has resulted in automatic activation w/out a phone call on several Lenovo laptops.  Can't say why.

FWIW,

Z.

I thought that every single Windows 10 Pro have downgrade rights to Windows 7 Pro. Windows 10 license terms: 7. Downgrade Rights. If you acquired a device from a manufacturer or installer with a non-academic Professional version of Windows preinstalled on it, you may use either a Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 7 Professional version, but only for so long as Microsoft provides support for that earlier version as set forth in (aka.ms/windowslifecycle). This agreement applies to your use of the earlier versions. If the earlier version includes different components, any terms for those components in the agreement that comes with the earlier version apply to your use of such components. Neither the manufacturer or installer, nor Microsoft, is obligated to supply earlier versions to you. You must obtain the earlier version separately, for which you may be charged a fee. At any time, you may replace an earlier version with the version you originally acquired.

Revisiting this:  MS has stated that Windows 7 is not supported on 7th-gen (Kaby Lake) processors.

http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20E470/ThinkPad_E470_specs.pdf

The E470 seems to be available with a 6th or 7th gen CPU so yours may be Sky Lake or Kaby Lake.  I don't know what the implications of a Kaby Lake processor are on downgrade rights.

I'd advise making your Win 10 recovery media before undertaking a downgrade install.

I have i3 (6th Generation), (no Kaby Lake), so that's not problem :) This isn't the newest version of E470. I have also T420, so I use my product key from it.

Thank you for your help!

E: I can also download Windows 10 recovery medias from Lenovo at any time. :)

Can I create recovery disk in my T420 and use it for downgrading the Windows 10-laptop or do I need something 'more official'?

I haven't tried that, but I would not expect it to work.  Perhaps others here have tried and can comment...

One of the problems with the MS approach to a downgrade install is finding media - and in later model machines getting it to work.

If you can find MS media you'll probably need to add USB 3.0 drivers [edit] and modify for a UEFI install if desired. Some laptops (not the E470 I think) will also need NVMe drivers.  These generally have to be added to the media, not inserted @ install time.
