E425 Edge: issues with windows taskbar freezing, browser not working, general slowness



I've been experiencing increasingly serious issues with my E425 since about last month.


Some background: owned this laptop for a bit over a year now (I believe), and starting last month I started to notice that when I left my laptop on without a restart for too long (I have a habit of hibernating rather than just shutting down) the laptop would occasionally and suddenly slow down to a near halt. It's hard to explain via text, but basically processing simple tasks (e.g. loading a web page) would not work and the windows task bar would freeze. when i try to load other programs to figure out what happened, there's no response. I've tried waiting for the tasks to process but nearly an hour later it's still not doing anything.


I mitigated these issues by simply shutting down my laptop before I went to bed each night and this seems to resolve the issue for the most part. Flash forward to this morning, and when I boot up my laptop for the first time I found the same issue (windows taskbar not responding, browser not loading, can't really load other programs either) and I'm left with the usual nuclear option of holding down the power button until the laptop turns off. I tried booting up 2 more times - still the same issue.


I don't even know how to begin diagnosing this... I'm fairly sure it's not a virus since I haven't really been doing anything risque online and I have two antiviruses active on that computer (Microsoft Security Essentials and another one I can't recall the name of right now)


I will say that when I began noticing these issues a month back, I realized that they cropped up shortly after windows updates, and that I tried resolving them by reverting to a restore point that's pre-updates.

Have you tried booting the system in Safe Mode? If you haven't, I would recommend trying that to see if we can narrow down the list of possible issues. To boot into Safe Mode, start your computer by turning it on. During the splash screen where it says "Lenovo" tap F8 repeatedly until a menu with a list of options pops up. Select Safe Mode and hit  Enter. See if your machine behaves any better while in safe mode.
