E485 CPU throttled on AC after waking from sleep

2018-08-29, 9:06 AM

Hi, I have a strange problem. After waking from sleep on AC, frequency of 2 cores of the CPU is capped at 1.6GHz and does not exceed it no matter what. Other 2 cores work fine. Windows task manager shows 100 % CPU usage, but 4 threads around 55 % (see screen), benchmarks scores go down accordingly (20 %), so it is not sensor bug.

It occurs only on AC, right after disconnecting AC it starts to behave normaly. But when I reconnect AC, it is capped again, only restart helps. Tried changing Power Options in Windows, but no luck. Guessing some bug in Thinkpad Power Management Driver or BIOS. Do you have the same problem, E485 users?

I had a similar issue: my graphics chip would downclock to abysmal levels when starting up from sleep or hibernation sometimes.

It seems to occur not only when waking up from sleep, but after EVERY reconnecting of AC. So I will have to restart my laptop after every time use it on battery. Nice work, Lenovo :(

I have the same issue, but I found something interesting, if I install veracrypt and boot from the veracrypt entry in the UEFI instead of Windows Boot Manager, CPU no longer stuck at 1.4GHZ

Could you please explain the steps you did? I installed VeraCrypt, disabled SecureBoot (necessary?), encrypted my system partition booted via VeryCrypt BootManager but this is still happening to my e585.

You boot directly from the Harddisk entry not Veracrypt DCS or Windows Boot Manager

But this issue still persist after suspend and resume

How to reliably demostrate this bug:

Go download CPUZ.

Then Run Stress Test 1866 is the correct score for Ryzen 7 2700U

After suspend and resume repeat you will find a different score

It stucks at 1400

I can confirm this bug exactly as stated above on the A485 I just received (having factory Bios 1.0). This is very annoying and needs to get fixed!

If this laptop could achieve a 90*C maximum I think we could see this bulldoze games and rendering software. Through my experiments with resolutions and drivers this laptop has the potential to play even the most demanding UE4 Games. But it constantly throttles from 950Mhz to 400

Re: E485 CPU throttled on AC after waking from sleep

I did not but this laptop with a ryzen CPU/GPU so that it can constantly throttle on me at a mere 60*C. It struggles to play many games because its theoretical maximum clocks are never reached due to temperature and TDP limits.

Are you serious? What, is the laptop made of wax that you can't afford a 85*C maximum temperature?

Why do we not have a bios update fixing this, or a bios option to set the limit of TDP? This is stupid on so many levels. The ability to UNDERVOLT the GPU/CPU at the very least needs to be implemented if temperature is of such high concern. At the very least a bios update within the next week. I am literally forced to use my computer constantly UNDERCLOCKED in order to share the TDP effectively with my graphics card clockspeed.

Lenovo, are you aware of the issue? Are you working on it? It has been nearly a month without any feedback or update.

Lenovo customer support - there's nothing else like it. Expect only the best when you pay $1k

All,

The engineers have been working on this and have been able to identify the root cause, they are now working on publishing the solution which, after testing, should be available mid-October.

My god, an actual reply. Is it the second coming of Christ? Serious note though, you know it might help if these came a bit more frequently, like

"technical team has been notified" or "technical team has responded" or "we really don't care about this issue right now" instead of leaving us all in limbo for another MONTH.

But something is better than nothing, at least thanks for that

Re: E485 CPU throttled on AC after waking from sleep

I do assume that this fix includes the throttling at 65C, low 12W TDP limit for both GPU and CPU shared, low both GPU and memory clock stuck at ~900mhz?

I'd like to think that the laptops I buy are actually useable and not prealpha tests, those belong in the steam store

Hi Andy, Is this fix going to be included in the mid October BIOS update for the A485? I can confirm this also happens on that model, just like the keyboard issue. Kind regards

Re: E485 CPU throttled on AC after waking from sleep

Hi all,

E485 just received Bios 1.45, which solves the issue:

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/sk/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-edge-laptops/thinkpad-e485-type-20ku/downloads/ds503790

Thanks for the fix!

So, next step up for E485 would be removing that annyoing power throttling from 25W to 22W after a few minutes of gaming ;)

This helped me too
