E545--USB ports on left side of computer all died at once, but port on right side is still working

When I insert a flash drive into one of the dead ports, initially the message pops up indicating that the computer recognizes something has been inserted into the port, but then it immediately disappears and the port is dead.

I went to Device Manger-->Portable Devices and tried to fix one of the three dead ports. At some point (after I scanned for hardware changes, I think) it did show the drive letter, but it had a yellow triangular error-message  indicator. I right-clicked and selected Properties, and it said "This device cannot start (code 10)." Then the drive letter disappeared, though it has come back sporadically.

I hope this is clear. Would appreciate any ideas.

Thanks.

I also noticed this problem. Only the USB port nearest the rear is working. Even when I boot into the BIOS with a USB drive attached, only that port enumerates anything.
