E595 - Incorrect ram frequency

Hey I just added another 8GB on my thinkpad to make it dual channel. The original one is 2666mhz, the new one is 2400. Shouldnt that be aligned with the lowest frequency one to get both on 2400?

Here's was I get on CPUZ.

How do I fix this knowing I cant do anything in the BIOS?

Re: E595 - Incorrect ram frequency

If I'm not mistaken, both your modules have been set to 1866 (line 3). The information at the bottom looks like the specs for each module read from spd.

Re: E595 - Incorrect ram frequency

It is not only the frequency which matters. The crucial memory you bought is CL17 @ 2400 and Samsung memory is CL19 @ 2666

There is no guarantee that Samsung can do CL17 @2400 as Samsung does not seem to list the specs... System is not going to tweak settings so it has to settle to a mode which is supported by both modules.

So to be 100% sure you need to buy another crucial, or return it and buy another samsung or buy a kit of 2 and remove the pre-installed memory and sell online etc.

For example I upgraded my E495 to kingston impact memory which does CL14 @2400 and it works perfectly so far.

Re: E595 - Incorrect ram frequency

Yeah you must be right it makes sense. Anyway I can reduce the CL of my stock samsung memory? Or would the system preform better with the lower frenquency and the better latency?

Re: E595 - Incorrect ram frequency

You can't change CL rating. It is set by manufacturer and stored in SPD. There are different settings for different speeds. You can normally see them in CPU-Z if you go to SPD tab.

You now have CL17 @ 1866. That is quite low and actualy I could not find any benchmarks with that memory and ryzen combination. See:

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-zen-2-memory-performance-scaling-benchmark/

But that does not mean it will be slow. It all depends on what you are doing. But if you want the best performance, you should get DDR4-2400 and CL14 or better. I think Kingston's price/performance was very good where I live.
