Entering ALT+ characters with a E420

Hello, After searching for over an hour in the internet I come to this community to ask for help. I am unable to insert special characters with the use of " ALT + ". I am currently trying to do my German homework and it's quite annoying searching for the "ß" symbol. In other computers I can easily input this characters with "ALT+0223". Yet I am unable to do so with my Thinkpad. I have an E420 ThinkPad which means that I do not have the "Scroll lock key" or a separated numbers pad. Can anyone help me please? Thanks in advance!

Re: Entering ALT+ characters with a E420

I wouldn't change your keyboard layout just for that.

You can create your own shortcuts / hotkeys for symbols you often use.

See here: http://www.ehow.com/how_2262414_shortcut-symbol-word.html

pretty much the same in other Word versions.

Or you could buy an external keypad ^^

Re: Entering ALT+ characters with a E420

How about in non-word editors like Gmail?
There has to be a solution to this.Typing alt+137 works on my other 3 computers in any editor, but not on my E420.
Unacceptable!
