Fingerprint sensor is not detected

Hi

I used to use fingerprint basically every day and now it stopped working. Not sure if it was after any sw update because it happens automatically. Sometimes it requires computer reboot that I am forced to do but if there is no restart required I guess I have no notification that there was any sw update.

I downloaded latest Fingerprint driver from lenovo site but you can see the result below.

I am on Windows7 64 bit.

Thank you

R

Re: Fingerprint sensor is not detected

Hi Cimenta,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I’m sorry to hear that fingerprint reader in your Lenovo ThinkPad is not getting detected properly.

Could you please check whether fingerprint reader is enabled in BIOS? Also, reset the internal finger print data in BIOS and check.

Hope this helps! Do post back if issue persists.

Best regards,

Mithun.

Re: Fingerprint sensor is not detected

Hi Cimenta,

Please let me know which model of ThinkPad you own. Certain BIOS versions doesn’t have an option to reset fingerprint data.

In BIOS, select security -> Fingerprint -> Check if there is an option “Reset internal fingerprint data”.

Best regards,

Mithun.

Re: Fingerprint sensor is not detected

Hi

I got lenovo E431, UEFI BIOS version HEET35WW (1.16) from 2013-08-13. Machine Type Model is 62773GA.

In BIOS I can go to Security / IO Port Access / Fingerprint Reader and there I can only enable/disable the reader.

Thank you

Re: Fingerprint sensor is not detected

Hi Cimenta,

Can you share the hardware ID of the device under biometric devices in device manager? Is there any yellow mark associated with the driver?

Uninstall the driver from device manager, reboot and try installing this Lenovo Fingerprint Manager.

Regards,

Mithun.

Re: Fingerprint sensor is not detected

no biometric devices.pngHi

I second phaeton27. I ran uninstall few times. It finished but the Lenovo Fingerprint Manager is still in the system. I rebooted. Still there. Tried to install the one you provided but got the same message like last time. See the screen shot  I provided.

There is no  section biometric devices in device manager.

Not sure what ID you want me to provide. There is only one unknow device in device manager which screen shot I already provide. Attaching more screenshots now.

Re: Fingerprint sensor is not detected

Updated!

Located old Validity Driver on Lenovo's site so those that don't have it already on their systems can download it from Lenovo. It's very hidden.

I had this problem occur on a new E531 this morning (8 Dec 2013) following a big Windows 7 update (81 updates) AND a Lenovo Thinkvantage update which was needed to fix the "Plugged In, Not Charging" problem.

Problem
------------
The Fingerprint reader disappears from Device Manager and is replaced with "Unknown Device" with the dreaded yellow exclamation mark.

Causes

-------------

This appears to be related to a recent Windows update that breaks the Fingerprint Sensor driver or application. The Validity drivers on the Lenovo site will no longer install. You can run the update with that driver (4.5.240.0 at http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/lz4xr3a2.exe) until you're blue in the face but it won't work. You need version 4.5.122.0 which is still on the Lenovo site but it's hidden at http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/ls4c71a2.exe. I'm sure Lenovo and Validity will release new drivers that fix this issue but in the meantime the old driver does seem to solve the problem.

Solution (what worked for me)
-----------------------------------------
1. Uninstall the unknown device in Device Manager (the unknown device is the fingerprint reader)
2. Go to C:\SWTOOLS\apps\Validity
which contains the old 4.5.122.0 driver(unfortunately many people appear to not have this on their systems but it is hidden on the Lenovo web site at http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/ls4c71a2.exe). Do not download drivers from any third party sites.
3. Double Click on WBF_Validity_FMA_Setup_L
(this is the 4.5.122.0 driver) or on the ls4c71a2.exe file you downloaded from Lenovo.
4. Chose "Repair the installation." I did this twice, the first time it said that it may have not installed correctly. The second time may not have been needed.
5. Go back to Device Manager and Scan for Hardware Changes
6. The driver will install and you will have an entry for Biometric Devices
7. You may have to remove and re-enroll fingerprints, but maybe not.

WARNING

--------------
DO NOT RUN THE LENOVO 4.5.240.0 DRIVER INSTALLATION FOR THE FINGERPRINT SCANNER AFTER FIXING THE PROBLEM--IT WILL NOT INSTALL AND IT WILL REMOVE THE FINGERPRINT SENSOR AGAIN. THAT DRIVER IS SCREWED UP.

WARNING

--------------

DO NOT DO A SYSTEM RECOVERY. THIS WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM TEMPORARILY BUT IT WILL REMOVE ALL THE WINDOWS UPDATES AND WINDOWS WILL JUST REINSTALL THE UPDATES THE NEXT TIME IT DOES AN UPDATE AND THE PROBLEM WILL REOCCUR.

Re: Fingerprint sensor is not detected

The support owes you a beer :-) This worked for me except

5. Go back to Device Manager and Scan for Hardware Changes

Need to be refined as scanning just "showed" unknown device" again but a minute or two later I got the buble system message that new devices was installed properly and then

EVERYTHING is back to normal. Smiley Very Happy

I guess I am lucky that you found the solution and that I got the ritht version in C:\SWTOOLS\apps\Validity directory on my disk.

Thank you
