I had the problem, fixed it by taking out the battery and unplugging the commuter for a minute, it now seems to work fine.
PS I have bios 1.21

Simple restart and even multiple restarts don't help. Either I need to remove battery and then do a reset to defaults in BIOS or do a simple reset to defaults. This helped me to fix the problem 2 times.
P.S. I'll try a new BIOS but since we still don't know how to force this problem to appear - it might tike a long time to reproduce the bug.

With new BIOS I've got the same problem again. Now even without connecting any external keyboard - hotkeys stopped to work after sleep mode.
What I can see is that Fn button by itself does produce an X event (if pressed twice):
but if Fn pressed with F1-F12 - then no output.
My BIOS version is:
BIOS Build ID: 80ET49WW

As bsagal already mentioned, problem can be fixed by removing the battery for 1 minute. I've just tried and hotkeys work now. BTW, resetting BIOS settings to default didn't help.
Also need to mention, that this is not only hotkey problem. Another symptom (which is more annoying) is no event after closing the lid. Display blanks, but laptop doesn't go into sleep mode. By removing the battery both problems can be solved at once. So they might be quite related one to each other.

The problem seems to be more annoying now, every time I restart the computer (without removing the battery), the problem returns.
I have also notice that when I have the problem I cannot load the thinkpad_ec Linux module (from tp_smapi) so it could be a problem with the thinkpad embedded controller crashing or something.

I just experienced the same problem with my Edge 13". Taking out the power chord and battery for about a minute worked for me but for how long? Pretty strange problem, and it's not my only one with my Edge machine.
@JameZ: if you'd like, I can PM you with some info about the machine.

The engineering team has tried to reproduce the error however were having issues reproducing the error.
We are currently looking for volunteers (In the US) for this issue however if customers are not willing to volunteer then we would advice customer to send the laptop in for service for them to check on the hardware.
