LAN adapter choice: Intel or Thinkpad?

2011-08-30, 20:07 PM

I am configuring a Thinkpad E520 system on the Lenovo online shop and have to choose between

--- Intel WiFi Link 1000

--- Thinkpad 1x1 b/g/n

Thinkpad is selected by default. Is there any reason to choose the Intel LAN adapter instead?

Thanks again Dave. Better support and documentation looks like a plus for Intel. Also other notebook vendors generally use Intel WiFi adapters..

You seem as puzzled by my language pack questions as I am by the packs themselves. Thanks for looking into this.

Well, if you're ever planning on running Linux, I would probably go with the Intel.   Intel wireless cards are usually better supported.

Thanks Dave. This notebook won't be running Linux. It's a second machine needed to keep my wife from spending hours on the main desktop PC playing online Sudoku and watching Youtube... while I' m waiting to use it for more "serious" things.

I am wondering if there are differences in relative performance of both adapters with a dual-band router (D-Link DIR-825/VTR)

also, if it's not too much to ask, could you also have a look at the other thread I posted about language packs in the Windows sub-forum?

http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/sb/CS-030709.htm

Here's some information from Intel regarding wireless settings and router settings.

I don't have anything with these 2 cards in them, so it would be tough for me to compare them, but there seems to be better support with the intel cards, especially on the intel site.

Keep in mind that the definition of wireless N is anything faster than 54mps, so depending on your router and its available settings, you might or might not get true "N" speeds.

I'll try to answer your other thread on language packs with some sense of understanding.
