Lenovo E430 running Windows 8 lost internet connection twice

I have a new Lenovo E430 running Windows 8 which lost internet connection twice. I've owned the laptop for two weeks and these connection drops all happened in the last two days,   It has an Intel CW-N 2230 (2x2BGN&BT4) adapter.

The first time I lost the connection, it showed the network list of all WiFi connections including my own, but it wouldn't allow me to reconnect to my router.  I was able to click to fix the connection and the connection was restored.

The second time, it said that no WiFi connections were available.  The list of networks was empty.  I wasn't given the option to fix the connection and had to restart the laptop to get the connection back.

I looked at the event viewer and saw several errors listed that occurred at about the time the connection was lost
This is the list of errors.  Can anyone give me some idea of what can be done to correct this?

  1. (GetHomepage()): Failed to find preferences file for Google Chrome. Check if it is properly installed.
  2. Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x6036DD62A7CC.  The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server
  3. The ScRegSetValueExW call failed for FailureActions with the following error:  Access is denied.
  4. The SWIX64 service failed to start due to the following error:  A device attached to the system is not functioning.
  5. The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID and APPID Unavailable  to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Thanks

Re: Lenovo E430 running Windows 8 lost internet connection twice

Hi, starbase1999

Have you ensured that both your BIOS and wireless adapter drivers are fully up to date. Sometimes not having the most up-to-date drivers can cause devices to behave rather oddly. If you haven't, then you can find the latest BIOS (v. 2.07) here, and you can find the latest wireless adapter driver here.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes,

Adam

Re: Lenovo E430 running Windows 8 lost internet connection twice

I just accessed my BIOS version from my system information window.  I'm at BIOS version 2.04, 9/11/2012.  You say that the latest version is 2.07.  I'm a bit hesitant to upgrade the BIOS since everything else is running fine.

Based on a recommedation from a Microsoft Windows forum, I got the latest WiFi adapter driver.

Since installing the driver about a week ago, I've lost internet connectivity once.  I was abler to see my WiFi router but it would not let me reconnect to it so I had to restart.  The next time it happens, I'd tryp ipconfig /release and see if that helps.

I'm a little concerned about the error event that I eep getting about once a day.

event 10016 - The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID  {7160A13D-73DA-4CEA-95B9-37356478588A} - CUIExternal Class

Not sure if it's a permissions issue of the fact that I'm have both IPV4 and IPV6 active at the same time.

If both are chekcked, doesn't it make more sense to uncheck IPV4 on Wi-Fi and leave IPV6 on?

Thanks.

Re: Lenovo E430 running Windows 8 lost internet connection twice

Hi, starbase1999

I can understand not wanting to do more updates to your system, since everything works fine and you don't want to create more issues on your system. However, an updated BIOS can sometimes be paramount for a system to work properly. And for that reason I would still recommend updating the BIOS. If necessary, you'll be able to roll back to 2.04.

I did some research on your Event 10016 error and found this page from Microsoft. Now, this document applies mainly to Windows XP 64-bit, but it may help you out as well. Looking over the fix from Microsoft, it involves registry edits. I can't advise on the registry edits or how to do them, but you can use the information provided by Microsoft if you wish. That being said, if you wish follow the fix, it is advised to backup your system in case something goes awry.

I would do the BIOS upgrade first and see if that fixes any issues that you are currently facing. The latest BIOS may fix all your problems and make the registry edits not needed.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes

Adam
