Re: Lenovo Thinkpad E460 High Disk Usage 100%

I have a 14 month old Thinkpad E460 i7 with 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD running Windows 10.

Lately I've noticed that on starting up the laptop either from off or from hibernation, the Disk Usage is running at 100% for some time often 10-15 minutes before settling down.

This is often with minimal transfer rates as shown below. The disk has been defragmented.

This leads to a very sluggish laptop when it is at 100%. Trying to watch netflix is almost impossible for 10-15 minutes as the computer just can't seem to buffer the data on the hard disk.

I've checked with a 2 year HP laptop and even on startup disk usage is only around 50%.

Anyone having similar problems.

Is this likely to be a hardware or software issue. I've tried updating the firmware to the HDD from the Lenovo website.

I've had so many issues with this laptop I don't think I'll ever buy Lenovo again.

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad E460 High Disk Usage 100%

The quickest way to find out I would think would be to click on the Process Tab in Task Manager and then click on the Disk column's header to sort it to show the processes with the highest disk access at the top.     Knowing what process, or processes are causing the high disk usage, may help you identify the culprit.

If you are concerned about the hard disk, you can Right Click on Start, select Command Prompt Admin, and then in the window type:   chkdsk c:  and press Enter to scan the HD for errors.   I will not fix the errors, but if it finds any it will prompt you to run it again in fix mode:  chkdsk c: /f   and schedule it to run on the next boot.

Good Luck,

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad E460 High Disk Usage 100%

There are no errors on chkdsk. The processes that are at the top of disk usage are just standard windows processes like service host, system, Google Chrome, the antivirus etc.

As I said, they are each only transferring 500kb/sec but still max out the disk usage.

I have done a restore of windows to a previous backup and the issue still remains.

What I wonder is if other E460 owners have this issue or is there a hardware fault somewhere?

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad E460 High Disk Usage 100%

I have seen the same in my E460 running Windows 10.

My friend told me attaching SSD hard disk will resolve the issue.

have you heard about this?

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad E460 High Disk Usage 100%

You need to either turn off Windows Defender or uninstall Kapersky, because running to realtime antivirus scanners simultaneously is not a good idea, and can cause high CPU/Disk usage, long scan times and scan conflicts.

Kapersky should have automatically notified Windows to turn off Defender during installation, so you might check with their forums for a better solution, but you can also disable defender manually.

Deactivate Windows Defender in Windows 7

In windows 7 if you want to run a third-party antivirus then you have to completely disable the windows defender compulsory.

And here is how you do it…

1. Open start menu, search windows defender, once appears to click on it.

desactivar windows defender

2. It will take you on another window where you will be seeing so many tools and setting but you have to click on option only.

desactivar windows defender

3. One another windows will open, click on administrator shown in the left pane of the window. Then check the box ‘use this program’ shown in the right side of the menu and then click on save.
