I'm having MAJOR troubles with Windows 8.1 64 Bit latest version on a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E540.
- Startup and BSOD
- Serveral effects on the Nvidia GT740M in the device manager not detected or driver could not start
- not detected in device manager
- detected, but driver not started

BIOS version is latest version available today.
Latest Intel driver available from Lenovo is very old from 20.12.2013, 10.18.10.3379
Nvidia GT740M driver: 9.1.2015, 220.127.116.1125, also older driver don't work reliable.
@Lenovo: Please provide newer drivers for Intel HD 4600 and Nvidia GT740M which work reliable on Thinkpad Edge E540 !!!!!

Yes, but old latest drivers are not stable, too (either Nvidia, Intel or the combination).
Will try Windows 10 beta drivers. But no one is available for E540 Edge. So I have to guess which works and try out which one is correct.
Intel driver always shows up correctly, it is already installed. I tried to setup the latest intel one from the intel website but it says it is now certified for that system.
Lenovo please fix the driver hell ....
I'm an IT expert (had already developed Windows Kernel Mode drivers) but it is really painfull not having a stable computer for my sun and consumes a lot of time for me and him.
BTW: I'm working with Windows NT based systems (NT 3.1, 3.5, 3.51, Win2k, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1) since Windows NT 3.1Beta releases and Windows 8/8.1 is the worst release ever. Never had so much BSOD and other problems in any other Windows Version on several computers.

Thank you. Will try, but I guess they can't help because the main issue is that no driver fix is available. Really unacceptable that no support is available for a new $1200 Thinkpad.
Other thinkpads like W540 are very good supported. They have beside the Nvidia GPU the same chipset including revisions of main Intel chipsets and Intel HD4600 graphic card and work reliable here. But the never drivers can't be installed on the E540.

As usual the only recommendation is:
1.) Reinstall the OS (Windows 8)
2.) Give it back to a repair center
That drivers are buggy or are too old or incompatible with Windows 8.1 can't be the case :-( So only support option 1.) and 2.) are valid options according to Lenovo.
A third option was only available after some discussion to write Lenovo a detailed description of the problem via E-Mail. Also they were not interested in the support forum thread. Writing them an email now ....
They also mentioned that it will only work with Windows 8. So you can't do Windows Updates to Windows 8.1 as they can't guarantee that it will work. Very good situation.
BTW: Driver are WHQL, so also the quality of signed WHQL drivers doesn't say anything about quality of the drivers .... So Microsofts quality process isn't worth anything ....
Windows 8/8.1: Never had so much blue screens in my Windows NT history ever, and the history is very long: :-)
