New E560 - Unidentified small, reserved partition on hard drive

2017-01-24, 9:01 AM

I have a new Thinkpad E560 that came with a 500gb internal Seagate GPT hard drive.

When I look at the disk layout in Windows 7 Computer Management all appears as expected.  But when I look at the layout via partitioning or imaging software, it shows an additional 128mb, full, "Reserved" partition.  (See first screenshot.)

What is this empty partition for?  Is it possibly reserved for use in system recovery operations?  Or ???

And should I include it when I make system images with imaging software (in addition to the EFI System Partition and C)?

Hi Rick,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As I understand that you have query regarding system partition in your new E560

As per the snaps the 128MB full Reserved- The partition is the Microsoft Reserved Partition which is also used for data storage for the Globally Unique Identifier (GUID).

For more details regarding System partition check this thread

I hope the above information helps.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Regards,

Prabhansh

Prabhansh -- Very helpful info and links, thanks!

Do you know why the Microsoft System Reserved Partition does not appear in the Disk Management section of Computer Management?  Also, would I need to include this partition when creating disk images that can be successfully used for restoration?

Hi again,

I believe one can't see the MSR partition in diskpart because it is hidden by default. Because Microsoft put it in there to protect from the consumer & also helps OEM's that people will not mess with the Operating System.

And for your second question you don't have to backup MSR, while creating system disk image.

The backup image is there in such a way that once created & restored from it will automatically create the MSR partition in a system

Thanks.  This is my first GPT drive, and I think one thing that was confusing me was an (apparently incorrect) assumption that the MSR partition served the same functions in a GPT drive as it did in MBR drive.  (With an MBR drive I do have to include the MSR to make an image that is restorable to a new drive.)

For the record, a bit of followup:  In creating a test image (using R-Drive Image 6.1) I did include all of the first 3 partitions (i.e., including the hidden 128mb reserved partition, but excluding the revovery partition).  Then I tested restore to a different (in this case 2TB) disk that I temporarily placed in the E560's main hdd compartment.  In doing the restore, I selected "full disc" (which restores all three partitions), and selected the option that specifies that the partitions should remain in their original positions.  That all worked fine.  After the restore completed the machine booted into Windows and everything was exactly the same as when I created the image.
