Hey guys, I just got my very first ever Laptop and it's the beautiful ThinkPad Edge E330 (NZSATGE).
I am a control freak. having built several PCs from scratch, having done all the OS stuff etc, getting everything to run MYSELF as much as possible is a big passion for me - I want complete control on what gets installed and what does not.
I booted up my Laptop and of course it has WIndows 8, which I am not a fan of at all but there was no other choice. I want to get friends with Windows 8 but I don't like the **bleep** ton of additional software.
I would like to reinstall windows 8 but in order to have it activated I need my serial number. I saw something like that in the BIOS but I wonder whether there is more that I need to know.
Thanks a lot in advance guys.

Hey there andrej-S,
To better direct you on your course of action, are you simply looking to do a basic reinstall, or are you looking to do a clean install? Knowing this, the community may be able to help better direct you.
Machines now shipped with Windows 8 have the product key embedded into the BIOS, and this can be located there. I look forward to hearing back from you, and it is great that you are enjoying your new ThinkPad Edge!
Thank you for joining the Lenovo Community.

Thank you a lot for your answer!
I am looking for a clean install. Complete wipe of the drives and fresh install.
On Windows 7 I used to do it this way - boot from DVD, delete all partitions on SSD until there is just 1 left. Format that, get windows on there. Done. As clean as possible.
Now with this thinkPad HDD/SSD setup I am a bit confused. How exactly do the HDD/SSD work together? I know that "hybrid systems" work like this - HDD has SSD as cache, both look like 1 drive for the end user. Popular data gets onto the SSD. I would like to take over control over that myself! Have 2 drives, SSD and HDD for different jobs. Will I be able to do that when I do a clean install?
I also do not know how to work with that intel quick boot system in the BIOS. It requires partitions on the SSD, okay, but how much control do I get over what gets taken and are the benefits of boot with intel quick boot vs. boot straight from SDD that significant? An SSD is a boot monster so I wonder why I would need intel quicjk boot.
Regarding product key - so does that mean that during the installation all I need to do is not enter a key and just hit "continue"?
Thank you a lot!

Here a few resources that will be important to review when considering a clean install:
Both are helpful resources when considering reinstalling.
With the Intel Quick Boot, are you referring to Intel Rapid Start Technology? If so, I found this user guide very helpful, as well as the intel site concerning these technologies. Ultimately, the decision is yours on exactly what you want to do.
You should not need an activation code. If you are installing a Windows 8, then activation code in BIOS should be picked up automatically during the installation, this is due to the OEM Activation 3.0
Hope this helps you Andre!

Those are the Windows and Lenovo recovery drives on your machine, that assist in Recovery. I'm glad I was able to help, if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask!

**bleep**, I just found out in the device manager that the SSD is only 16 GB , so there is no way to install windows on it. It has be get installed on the HDD.
So I wonder, when I will be deleting partitions, cleaning up etc and then finally selecting a partition for windows - how do I tell the system that both drives are supposed to look like one? I read that ExpressCache takes care of that, but don't I install that AFTER Windows?
Thank you a lot in advance.

No Problem Andrej-S. Yes, the machines generally come with that 16GB SSD specifically for ExpressCache, which you will install that after you windows installation. As far as how they "appear", I believe that it is handled with the install of the software.

Alright, I am done with the install. You have been very helpful, thank you!
However - a new problem occurs regarding ExpressCache.
