Screen won't come up after powering on - bad RAM or CMOS battery?

Dear Community,

I have a ThinkPad E530 but I suppose this is more a generic problem. I have recently upgraded from 4 GB to 8 GB RAM. The system worked perfectly for several weeks. Yesterday I completely ran out of battery on my laptop, and this morning the system wouldn't start - the fan starts turning, the red LED comes on, that's it. Screen is dead. I tried to remove the new RAM module and this seems to have fixed the problem. Tried to put it back in, same dead screen again. I'm just wondering if this is necessarily a faulty RAM, or if it could be a BIOS problem related to the dead battery from last night and a potential dead CMOS battery. I would like to know if this is possible before I go into the ordeal of returning the new RAM module and replacing it for an other one. Thanks for your thoughts!

Re: Screen won't come up after powering on - bad RAM or CMOS battery?

Hi David,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with No POST on your ThinkPad L540.

  • Is there any beep sound coming from the system?
  • Please check if the issue persists after removing the battery.
  • If the issue persists then check with performing power drain, to proceed with power drain please remove both power adapter and the battery from the system & press and hold the power button for 30 seconds and then connect only power adapter and boot the system once and then shutdown the system connect battery and check.
  • Disconnect the CMOS battery from the system and try to switch ON the system.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar
