Speaker volume uselessly low. SmartAudio HD does not work properly

I have many disappointments with my Thinkpad Edge 13 but the most disturbing is the exceedingly low sound volume and the impossibility of increasing it.  The unit came with a software called Conexant SmartAudio, and this software provides among its features an equalizer.  There are presets to the equalizer and those have some effect on the sound, but there is an option for custom adjusting the equalizer and that does not work.  This software "sits" between the Windows sound drivers and the audio amplifier.  It should stand to reason that if I maximize all the bands in the equalizer then the overall volume should increase however not only does the overall sound not increase,  as a matter of fact the only effect I can detect from simultaneously increasing all the bands it that the higher frequencies become muted.   I've looked around the internet for an update of this Conexant software but no luck, I've also been unable to find a replacement.  When I listen to audio from a video that is being reproduced through a media player such as Winamp, I don't have trouble because Winamp comes with an equalizer (which also has an overall gain adjustment)  But when I watch videos through my browser (YouTube for example) making the sound go through the a media player is not an option, and the SmartAudio equalizer is useless.

Any suggestions

Thanks

hey oxossi,

curious to know, have you tried uninstalling the current audio driver and let the generic audio drivers from windows install?

I'm definitely curious about the uninstalling - I've had the same issue. Just terribly quiet. Are you referring to uninstalling Realtek? Please excuse my ignorance - while not incompetent, I'm not the most tech proficient on the block, either. Smiley Happy

Re: Speaker volume uselessly low. SmartAudio HD does not work properly

Thank you, Serge - it helped a little. Would love to figure out a way to get a little more juice, but I might be stuck having to get a headphone amplifier or something.

Edit: I take that back - helped more than a litle. Once I disabled "Loudness Equalization" it became more noticeable!

Re: Speaker volume uselessly low. SmartAudio HD does not work properly

I think this'll work - I have a cold right now and my whole head is congested, so I haven't heard all that well for the past couple of days. Probably not the best time to establish whether it's going to work or not... Smiley Happy

Re: Speaker volume uselessly low. SmartAudio HD does not work properly

Go into SmartAudio, and disable the headphone limiter (the giant headphone icon).

Go into the Sound control panel. Go to the Conexant adapter's properties, and go into the Enhancements tab and check "Disable all Enhancements".
