ThinkPad 11e wont boot - need help interpreting diagnostic results

2018-10-11, 21:52 PM

Hi, I'm having issues with my laptop and I'm trying to troubleshoot. I'm new to this so please bear with me as I learn the correct terminology!

The laptop will not boot. It gets stuck at the lenovo logo screen as soon as I turn it on. I can access BIOS which I used to run the diagnostic tool which a few components failed. The failed components are displayed in the photo below: Smart short self-test, Drive self-test, Random seek test, and Targeted read test. Can anyone help me interpret results? Does this mean I have a problem with my hard drive? The computer will run Ubuntu off a USB stick which led me to believe maybe it is Windows 8 that is broken, but when I tried to install Ubuntu the installation failed so now I'm thinking it may be a deeper issue.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, unfortunately that looks like a hard disk failure. You will have to replace the drive, then reinstall Windows and your applications on it.

These days solid state drives (SSDs) are quite inexpensive. They're much faster and more reliable than HDDs. You may want to consider using an SSD rather than HDD.

Oh no! That's unfortunate, but I guess it could be worse. It sounds like this might be something I could do myself. Do you have any recommendations for a product that would be compatible or resources for how to peform the replacement correctly? Thanks for your help and for the suggestions about SSDs.

A good place to start would be this Support page: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-11e-series-laptops/thinkpad-11e

In particular, both the User Guide and the Hardware Maintenance Manual provide detailed instructions for replacing the HDD/SSD. I don't know which generation of 11e you have. Make sure you have the corresponding manuals using the model number, e.g. 20DA, 20D9, etc.

As for SSD recommendations I'd stick to well-known brands like Crucial, Samsung, Intel, etc. According to RAM & SSD Upgrades | Lenovo ThinkPad 11e | Crucial.com any standard 2.5" x 7mm SSD should work.

Since the original HDD is defective, after you install the new drive you'll need to restore data from backup or do a fresh install of Windows.
