ThinkPad E430 - Can't Connect to a G Router

Hi,

I've bought a brand new ThinkPad E430 (i3, 4 GB RAM) with Windows 8 64 bit preinstalled. While the machine works great (my only complaint is a short battery life - only 3 hours or so on "Balanced" plan with no serious tasks on), it doesn't want to connect to my Asus RT-G32 (Rev. B1) router (only B/G modes are supported).

The router is 100% error free (I have several phones and computers on it and everything works fine), but my newest computer simply doesn't work with it. It does connect, but only "partly". Some websites work, but after a while, they stop working, and Gmail Talk and Skype, for example, never connect while on Wi-Fi (on cable, everything works flawlessly).

I've tried just about every router setting (channels, wireless mode set to "54G only", changing from WPA to WPA2 login, etc.) and I've played with Win 8 cared settings (N mode disabled, only G mode enabled), but nothing seems to work for more than a few minutes.

Now everything is back on default and I'm on cable again.

Could somene please advise if there is anything else to try? Btw, I've connected the computer on N router at my girlfriends place, and it works good. It only refuses to work on my G router.

Thanks and kind regards,

Henrik

Re: ThinkPad E430 - Can't Connect to a G Router

Hi, lemming2030

I would recommend to make sure that the drivers in your machine are up to date, particularly the wireless LAN and the BIOS. Having these updated may help your issue. All possible driver updates for your machine can be found here. You can use the dropdown menus to sort by device type and operating system to make searching faster.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

Adam

Re: ThinkPad E430 - Can't Connect to a G Router

Hi Adam,

thank for your reply. I've already installed the latest WiFi drivers and I've updated the BIOS, but it didn't help.

I've also went to Intel's site and used their driver updater - it installed the latest drivers for WiFi display and Intel PROSet WiFi software.

Anything else maybe I can try?

Re: ThinkPad E430 - Can't Connect to a G Router

Hi, lemming2030

I have a question for clarification: Is your computer having a hard time connecting to the router (network) or the Internet?

Also, make sure the chipset driver (found here) is up to date.

Best,

Adam

Re: ThinkPad E430 - Can't Connect to a G Router

Hi Adam,

well, it always connects to the router, the internet does work for a few minutes, and then slowly it starts failing. First, my connection with Blackboard IM is lost, then goes the Google Talk connection, and after a while (like 5 mins), even websites stop working.

Thanks for the link. Is this chipset driver also OK for Win 8? I'm not sure where to check the driver version.

Best regards,

Henrik

Re: ThinkPad E430 - Can't Connect to a G Router

Hi, Henrik

Apologies. I sent you a driver for Windows 7 accidentally. No, this is the driver for your chipset.

To check driver versions, you can navigate to Control Panel ► Device Manager, and right-click on the device in question. Select Properties from the list, and then click on the Driver tab, and the current driver version will be listed.

Best,

Adam

Here are some statistics from my wireless:

transmit-errors.PNG

As you can see, there are some errors. Dropox stopped working, then Google Talk, and I had to plug in the cable again to make this post.

No problem. I've checked the chipset driver in the registry (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/209590-12-which-chipset-driver-version-have) and it's the newest one.

Re: ThinkPad E430 - Can't Connect to a G Router

Hi again,

Since the computer works well on your girlfriend's N router, the issue may lie in the technology of the router itself. The router you are using runs on a single band frequency of 2.4 GHz, which used to be very common. So common, in fact, that there are many things that can cause interference. Newer routers, such as a/b/g/n devices, use dual band frequencies of 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz. The experience you've had with the N router makes me think that, to obtain maximum and peak performance from your wireless experience, a dual band router with a/b/g/n capabilites may be necessary.

Hope it helps,

Adam

Re: ThinkPad E430 - Can't Connect to a G Router

Hi Adam,

thanks for your help. I've already ordered a new N router. I just hoped I can fix this by not spending any extra money. Smiley Happy

However, I'll now try a live version of Linux Mint 14, just to see, if I'll be able to use the internet normally with that OS and drivers.

Thanks again!
