ThinkPad EDGE E540 stuck before boot - FN-Key lights green

Hi,

the Laptop hangs before booting, FN-Key lights green.

I tried:

  • battery was taken out
  • BIOS battery was taken out
  • left with no voltage at all for days

No effect.

What else can I try?

Kind regards,

Oliver

Hi siekenet!

Welcome to the community forums.

How long that the laptop hang when booting up to Windows OS? Are you getting a blue screen with an error code? Could you try to perform a Power Drain on the laptop and check if the issue remains? Here's how https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/troubleshoot/lpt000352?CID=ww:lenovosocial:20x9m6.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: ThinkPad EDGE E540 stuck before boot - FN-Key lights green

Thanks for your reply.

I did the Power Drain with no battery, with no BIOS battery, with no voltage at all for days.

No bluescreen, just a black screen. Even the BIOS screen or the LENOVO logo don't come up. Just the red LED and the green FN-Key light.

I think of a bug in the BIOS - maybe. Is there a way to reflash the BIOS with no Operating System?

Did you remove other battery aside from the main battery of the laptop? You don't need to remove the battery if it's internal and after you press the power button for 10 seconds, you need to plug in the charger and try to turn it on. Could you verify, how did you perform the Power Drain?

Re: ThinkPad EDGE E540 stuck before boot - FN-Key lights green

Thank you for your help.

I've done the following:

  • I removed all(!) both batteries (you wrote: no need of removing batteries aside from the main one, but it couldn't be harmful. Right?)
  • I removed the power supply
  • I pressed the power button for 20 seconds

Have I forgotten anything?

No effect at all.

The I've done the following:

  • connecting the power supply
  • pressed the power button

And then:

  • black screen
  • no message
  • no logo
  • red LED on
  • green FN-key-LED on
  • cooler on
  • also there's now way to boot from another media (e.g. USB stick oder CD/DVD)

I think it's noticeable that I can press the power button for 4 seconds (or so) to power off. So maybe there is still some BIOS activity?
