ThinkPad Edge 15 strange behavior

Hi everyone, I have a ThinkPad Edge 15 running Windows 7 Home Premium that I bought near the begnning of 2011. So far it has run flawlessly, but today I started to experience some suspicious activity.

Occasionally, my mouse cursor lags considerably, my webcam indicator icon flashes between on/off even though I left it off, and my volume mutes and unmutes itself. I get strange key input like ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''d'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''d''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' even when I'm not pressing any keys. I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials but it hasn't found any spyware.

Thank you for helping me resolve this issue.

Re: ThinkPad Edge 15 strange behavior

I think you should give MalwareBytes AntiMalware a run.
Also possibly a Kaspersky bootable rescue disk.

There's been a particularly nasty rootkit going around camoflauged as Adobe Flash.

Re: ThinkPad Edge 15 strange behavior

I have Ubuntu 11.04 on  a separate partition. Would it be affected by a rootkit or is it OS specfic?

Re: ThinkPad Edge 15 strange behavior

Does Ubuntu work properly?

If it does, I'd give the Windows partition a full shakedown using Kaspersky Rescue Disc.

If not, then I think you may have just a faulty keyboard

Re: ThinkPad Edge 15 strange behavior

Ubuntu is actually experiencing similar issues, so it could be the keyboard. Also, could a keyboard problem affect the mouse cursor?

Re: ThinkPad Edge 15 strange behavior

Possibly. The TrackPoint module is part of the keyboard, so they would be similarly affected.

I'd ask for support. It may be abrasion on the keyboard cable causing certain paths to short-circuit.

Re: ThinkPad Edge 15 strange behavior

Would it also affect USB mice? I'm also having trouble with that.

Re: ThinkPad Edge 15 strange behavior

I'd think the TrackPoint module would be sending garbage or random signals constantly that would thus interfere with all mice attached to the computer.
