Re: Thinkpad E580 - Radeon RX 550 performance issue

https://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol/

But beware, value 64 is not recommended and the fan may be damaged in the long term. A funny solution to the problem of a new laptop, right? Lenovo ....

Re: Thinkpad E580 - Radeon RX 550 performance issue

The poor cooling system was definitely something that made me question whether it was worth buying the Thinkpad E580 but I didn't expect it to be so bad to the extent that the dedicated graphics card is totally useless. Only the integrated Intel graphics is useable for games and I find it unacceptable that they include the option to have the RX 550 when it throttles down after just a few minutes. I watched the graph in MSI Afterburner and the GPU clock drops from 900 MHz to 200 MHz when the temperature reaches about 78C. It might be hot but for a GPU it's no problem at all and I'd understand it more if the GPU clock drops slightly. A drop of 700 MHz is crippling though!! The GPU clock doesn't return to 900 MHz even when the temperature drops, which is very odd IMO.

Another sneeky thing is that the memory bus width is 64 bit instead of 128 bit...

For reference, I have updated all drivers and am running with the latest BIOS version 1.38. The truth is probably that they're preventing overheating and that there is no solution without a better cooler. The annoying thing is that there is room inside for a better cooler. See inside for the wasted space.

I've attached a picture to show the pitiful cooling system and wasted space around it. I opened up my E580 to install a hard drive for storage when I first got it. It was cheaper to do it myself...

Today I bought a cooling pad (hama 53065 - low price and absolutely sufficient cooling, I hate cooling pads, but there is no other way) and with many hours of maximum load the CPU temperature dropped to 60 and the GPU does not exceed 70 degrees (before temperature was around 85!). All with 1.13 bios (there is no problem upgrading to the latest now) and a bios controlled fan. TPFanControl app is no longer required. My problem is SOLVED ;)

AdamK1, would you be able to perform a stress test but using the latest version of the bios? I am curious if such a cooling pad is able to mitigate all the issues.

If you can, make sure to do the test with and without the pad so we can see whether it actually works.

Ok, here it is:

 - With cooling pad, BIOS 1.13, about 2 hours playing, game Kingdome Come, normal details, 25-35 FPS, no problem

BIOS upgrade to latest - 1.38

- With cooling pad, BIOS 1.38, about 30 min playing, game Kingdome Come, normal details, 25-35 FPS, no problem

- With cooling pad, BIOS 1.38, game BF1 about 10min low details (50fps), about 30min playing with ULTRA details, unplayeable 18-25 FPS, no problem

 - Without cooling pad - BF1 ultra details, after 5 min FPS DROP to 8fps, GPU reduced clocks and reduced performance

..... So yes, cooling pads solve our problem :)

Ok, I know that E 580 is not gaming laptop, but I had same gpu issues in video editing programs, graphics, etc. ...

Those are interesting results. Keep us updated whether you run into throttling problems during longer game sessions.

It is honestly great news that after all it is possible to upgrade bios to the latest version and still be able to play games on the rx550. Thanks for taking the time to do the tests AdamK1!

dear Adam, thanks for the news.
But... Cooling pads? Why should I add cooling pads to play a game I'm able to use in a 13 years old laptop???
And, by the way, don't you think that all this work is something that the **bleep**ing Lenovo engineers , and not us customers, should make after selling me a 1200€ pc that is not working?
my god, what a **bleep**!

Yes, it's a solution that personally annoys me, but at the moment it is probably the only one for us.

This is a shameful and fatal mistake from Lenovo on such a legendary and durable Thinkpad models.

It is really funny to solve problem with new BIOS, and "turns off" the graphics card when temperature rises ?

"hey Lenovo, fan makes annoying noise"

"ok, fixed, fan speed reduced"

"hey Lenovo, system is overheating"

"ok, fixed, performance is on 50%"

Shame, Shame, Shame...

Re: Thinkpad E580 - Radeon RX 550 performance issue

It seems that we won't be using the graphic card affectively. Are there any option to disable it fully except disabling it from device manage?

When AC is not plugged, this useless graphic card continue using battery , obviously , and I want to stop that. If i do it from device manager, every time I re-start the computer, GPU's fan runs without a stop. Only way to stop it is re-enabling and disabling it again from the device manager which botters me a lot.

If I disable it, it gives 1/3 extra juice for my battery which will end up in using 5,5-6 hours with brightness nearly maxed. If it is enabled, then all I can get is around 4 hours.

If I have a chance, I'll totaly remove the GPU and start using my laptop in peace. I'm enough of with the problems of this GPU.
