Thinkpad E580 - System unresponsive after screen hibernated

2018-09-01, 18:22 PM

Hi all,

I've got a Thinkpad E580 ( 20KS-001JGE ) with an Intel UHD Graphics 620 with Windows 10. Everytime the computer is turning off the screen for saving energy (not sleep mode) it won't turn on again and the only thing that works is a force shutdown by holding the power button.

I noticed the following behavior:

  • The LEDs on the power button and keyboard are still activated but neither the mousepad nor keyboard and power button can wake up the screen.
  • The muted LED on the F1 key won't switch when attempting to control the volume, however pressing Fn + Esc toggles the FnLock LED positioned on the Esc key.
  • The computer stays responsive for the first few seconds after turning off the screen and only then becomes unresponsive.
  • When I ran a background process like scanning for driver updates, the problem didn't appear and I could wake the screen just by touching the mouspad.

I searched the whole internet and tried a lot of things, installed all available driver and BIOS updates but could not resolve the problem.

First, I assumed it was some problem with the graphics driver. But since the system stays responsive when e.g. scanning for driver updatesmakes me think it might be related to some other hardware.

Any advice?

Thanks!

I called the support hotline: More system updates and even a full system reset did not resolve the issue. So I sent the laptop in and I think they changed the motherboard. It's now working.

This helped me too

Hey @all,

I came up with a other solution that i found here in the forum.

Another User had this Problem when he running on battaries.

The solution was to install Windows with an original ISO from Microsoft, not this rubish Lenovo-recovery.

And what can i say, it works very well, no problems anymore.

The Support for this was very bad, next time i will buy fron another manufacture.

I have the same problem. Screen goes black after not using, and is unresponsive after some time. Power button light and NumLock lights are still on, suggesting it hasn't gone into sleep mode correctly? I've updated everything through vantage.  I have to do a hard restart each time, not good.

This is not a solution, you should better not say things like this that don't apply to everyone. Most people buy a laptop, open it 10 times a year, and yes, in three years the warranty expires, so what? it was used just 30 times, it doesn't mean it should not work !!!!!!!!!!!

And this happens to ALL the lenovo laptops owners I know, it's a general Lenovo problem lasting for more than 10-15 years and they don't want to even investigate what's the problem with their laptops and waking from sleep.

I don't say it's their fault, maybe it isn't, but this is what people see, it's happening only with their laptops -> they should investigate it, even if maybe it's not their fault !!!!!

Let's all sue Lenovo and ask 1 milion dolars per hour, because we lost our work and were forced to reboot.

Maybe when they'll have 1 bilion people asking 1 milioin dolars per hour they will start investigating the problem !!!

That's how ex-comunist state companies work !
