Re: Thinkpad E590 does not boot up

Hi,

I purchased this new Thinkpad e590 in March 2019. It worked ok till now, but now refuses to boot up.

When I push the power button, it stays at this point

- Blank screen

- Keyboard led stay on lights for Caps lock,  ESC,  Num lock together

-Fan turns on

and it doesnt proceed any further with the boot process

I tried the following

- Connecting an external display

- Connecting an external keyboard

- Disconnecting all periherals (keyboard, mouse, monitor)

- Power drain by holding power button down for 7 seconds, 15 seconds, 20 seconds, connecting ac power and turning it on again - device is stuck in same state as mentioned above.

This has a sealed battery, so the battery is not removable, unless I take off the back panel, something I want to avoid since this is a new laptop.

Sometimes connecting the ac power (usb-c connector) doesnt even turn on the led besides the usb-c port. I then need to do the power drain sequence by disconnecting the ac power, pushing power button for 7+ seconds, and then the light besides the usb-c port turns on. Now, when I push the power button, the device goes back to the stuck state mentioned above, else nothing starts up on the device, not even the lights on 3 keys mentioned above and fan.

I am unable to use this laptop at all.

Please advice on what I could do to resolve it. I will open a case with Lenovo given that it is in warranty within 4 months of its purchase, but if there is a simpler solution to get it fuctional again, It will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Thinkpad E590 does not boot up

Literally 100% same issue. I bought mine around the same timeframe.

I was able to sporadically get some of the keyboard to work and then kaput.

I then tried an external keyboard and it worked a total of one times.

On reboot it screamed at me forever while stuck on boot screen.

Rebooted and now its making like a disk buffering sound and stuck on boot screen.

Neither keyboards are taking commands.

I already called lenovo at 3am after being up all night trying to fix it.

Theyre sending me an rma box to ship to depot.

Im not sure if i want it back, upgrade to t590 or something else all together.

Re: Thinkpad E590 does not boot up

Hi Thinkpad_user14! Welcome to our forums community. Since you tried connecting to an external monitor and the issue persist, the is more likely the issue is within the graphics card. Could you try booting to BIOS? Follow the steps here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500222. Let us know if you were able to.

Re: Thinkpad E590 does not boot up

After messing with mine some more i noticed i am able to get past the black screen after closing my lid and reopening it after a few seconds.

Keyboard input from usb external is only allowed after doing the same action of closing and opening lid at any time before the OS is able to boot.

Entering bios it repeatedly beeps and scrolls through options and menus.

I was able to update windows, update lenovo vantage/system update, tried to update bios via vantage was given successful but bios is still same version.

Tried pc reset, bios reset.

Re: Thinkpad E590 does not boot up

Hi Jwes_Lenovo,

I had tried F1 earlier, but there was no response at all. I could not enter the Bios.

My laptop is dead at this point. I The led next to the charging usb-c port does not light up when the power is connected.

It does not start up/ no lights are seen anywhere on this device now.

I dont think there is any other option than returning to Lenovo. I will call Lenovo support for next steps.

Thanks,

Re: Thinkpad E590 does not boot up

Hi Linuxpir8,

Glad to see you found a workaround for it, and your laptop is functional again.

My laptop is dead, with no lights at all. I will involve Lenovo for assistance/ return.

Thanks,
