Thinkpad Edge E330 black screen

Hello everyone.

I'm having problems with my edge E330. It's been working like a charm for 2.5 years. One day I had it connected to external TV, and closed the lid, without turning off. It went into hibernation, and since that, only ext. monitor worked.

After a few attempts of changing startup settings, it's now completely black on both screens(failure!). I've managed to save files via the SystemRescueCD (thx, linux!), but windows or even BIOS won't load, it seems. The machine powers up, and then it's stuck. The internal monitor seems physically broken, but I can't be 100% sure of that.

Anyone experienced a similar situation, or has any clue what to do? Should I try to replace the screen, or maybe the hd first, to check if the monitor actually works?

Thx in advance.

Re: Thinkpad Edge E330 black screen

Hi Davidb1,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Is there any LED indication on the system, have you checked performing power drain?

If you have not, then please follow the steps, remove AC adapter and the battery from the system. Press and hold power button for 15 to 20 seconds and release. Perform this steps 2 to 3 times and after that connect only AC adapter and try switching ON the system.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: Thinkpad Edge E330 black screen

Hello, and thanks for the reply!

Yes there is power in the system. Both AC and the battery works fine, and there's lighted LED (the dot above the 'i' in Thinkpad) both below the keyboard and on the back of the monitor.

I tried the power drain you mentioned, but no change. It starts up, but seemingly stops loading after about 0.5 secs, no Bios, just black screen.

Re: Thinkpad Edge E330 black screen

Hi Davidb1,

Thank you for the reply!

Can you take a small video on that, and put it on any of the 3rd party link and send it to me? I think this could be issued with the system board, as you are telling that there is no display after connecting to an external display.

Did you find if the system was over heating?

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: Thinkpad Edge E330 black screen

Hello again. I don't have the time to do that right now, and I can't easily see what information it would reveal. (?).

What happens is plainly:

Power on - lights on, indicating power OK, fan starts (as normal) - but nothing happens on the screen. To power it of again, I just have to press pwr button for 1 sec ( normally, you'll have to hold it 3-4 secs for it to shut down.

Both "Win7 repair cd" and "lenovo recovery cd" starts from cdrom, but with no action onscreen, they're useless. But with "SystemRescueCD", external monitor works, indicating both * power ok *graphics card ok *keyboard ok, and also *hd ok. What seems to be the problem is twofold: *some dismal settings prevent win from starting. * Internal monitor is dead black.

I don't think it would give you more info to make a video of the defunct startup, but if you really need it, I could probably do it in a couple of days.

Btw: No indication of overheating, except when I have it too long on lap (but that's seldom).

thx, db1.

Re: Thinkpad Edge E330 black screen

Hi Davidb1,

Now I got it, this is no boot issue, where in the system is not booting to Windows. I think the recovery disc which you are using is having some issue. Can you check if the disc is working with other system, only to verify if it is booting from disc and you can able to see the options from that.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar
