Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

Using Windows 10. Certain keys have stopped working. Nothing happens when I press ?/ key, pgDn, left arrow, right arrow, down arrow and 0 on the numeric pad. Everything else works fine. Did not spill anything on the keyword. Just suddenly stopped working.

Have tried uninstalling and installing keyboard driver. Checked I had latest driver. Windows 10 fully updated.

I opened up the panel and removed the keyboard, unpluged the keyboard cables and plugged in again. Vacumed the  the keys and checked for any dirt under the key.

Nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

Do I need to buy new keyboard?

Many thanks.

Re: Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

E520 isn't Windows 10 compatible and there is no Lenovo support. You should have checked before upgrading.

Re: Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

Hi GeorgeM,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

The laptop E520 is not compatible for Windows 10 update. However try your luck, Uninstall the latest driver and install the prior version of the keypad drivers. Please find the link given below for same.

http://support.lenovo.com/in/hi/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-edge-laptops/thinkpad-edge-e5...

Please let me know whether the above step helped you.

Thank you, have a good day.

Regards,

Naveen.v

Re: Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

Thanks for the reply. I see on Lenovo website that Lenovo has not tested Windows 10 on the E520 and therefore not supported. I don't think this is the same as saying it is not compatible - only not tested. Yes I should have checked.

But do you really think this is a driver issue. Why? Only a few buttons affected. The up arrow works but not the other arrows. How can a driver have this kind of affect?

Re: Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

Thank you for the advise. I do not see a suitable driver for the keyboard using the link you suggested. Why do you think this is a driver issue? Can I try driver for a different Edge laptop. See also my previous post on this thread.

Re: Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

Hi GeorgeM,

It was just a try I suggested you because it might work but not sure, I just wanted you to give a try that’s the reason I mentioned try your luck and this are the common issues that community members have come across but for only for those systems which is compatible with windows 10 installation. Anyways to confirm whether it is a keypad issue please check with the on screen keyboard or with the external keyboard and see whether the non-functional keys are working.

To check with the on screen keyboard, in the logging page you will an option to the left side bottom of your screen, click that and select on screen keyboard.

Please let me know whether the above steps helped you.

Thank you, have a good day.

Regards,

Naveen.v

Re: Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

Hi GeorgeM,

To update a driver for the different edge laptop, you can go through Lenovo support site it will be a real help for you to update all the drivers or download Lenovo solution centre. Please find the link given below to visit Lenovo support site:

www.support.lenovo.com

Once you visit the page Lenovo support home page, you can see an option search products, under that you have a search bar type your model number or the machine type number (i.e. MTM number) later click enter and it will take you to the product support page. Once you are in the product support page you will see a option called drivers and software > click on that > under drivers and software you will see an option called components in there you can search for any drivers u are in need with.

Please let me know whether the above suggestion helped you.

Thank you, have a good day.

Re: Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

Hi Naveen
Thank you for your ongoing patience and help.
I can confirm that the on-screen keyboard works fine including for the keys that don't work on the physical keyboard. An external USB keyboard also works fine.
One other thing I should have mentioned. All the keys definitely worked fine after installing windows 10. I have proof of this. It was only after several weeks that the keys mentioned stopped working.
I already had the Lenovo solutions centre and had run the test on all devices - no issues are detected.
When I check for drivers as you suggest there is nothing suitable under the component option mouse and keyboard. Only drivers here are
Synaptics UltraNav driver for Windows 8.1
Lenovo Enhanced Performance USB Keyboard for Windows 8.1
So I also checked under Software and utilities. The only suitable one which I installed is
Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 10
This did not resolve the issue. I wonder if Lenovo could send me a new keyboard to try. If it works I would be able to report a successful solution. If not I can send it back. What do you think?

Re: Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

Hi GeorgeM,

Well I appreciate the troubleshooting steps you have performed, but I guess it can be a keyboard issue. So it’s better to replace the keyboard with new one. So here I would like to inform you, if the laptop is in warranty then you can call to the Lenovo customer support and log the call for new keypad which will be covered under warranty.

However, I would be glad to help you out in finding the service centre details as per your location. Please find the link given below for the further assistance.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I’m sure they will be a great help.

Please let me know whether the above suggestion helped you.

Thank you, have a good day.

Re: Thinkpad edge E520 keyboard keys not working

Hi Naveen

I got a quote from Lenovo for the keyword. It is $100 including delivery!! It goes without saying that this is ridiculous considering the circumstance.

Firstly it is more than the cost of the laptop.

2) The laptop is no longer fully supported by Lenovo.

3) Returns are not accepted.

4) A consumer would reasonably expect the keyboard to last more than 3 years if looked after so this is a poor reflection of the quality of the product and should be compensated by selling the part for a lot less if not free.

5) The keyboard sells for $52 on ebay including delivery and returns are accepted. Basically better customer service and support than Lenovo offer on their own product.

In my view this is price guaging.

George
