Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

Hey Guys!

I recently bought the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520. Im quite sure it supports Ultrabay, because I can remove one screw and pull out the DVD-drive while system is running without any problems Smiley Happy

My question is: There are 2 different hard drive adapters available (at least here in germany), which one is the right for my model?

There is one saying "the newer one" with 12.7mm and a special thing for holding the harddrive save in place:

And the other one, named with "for older models" with 9.5mm and not this special holding-stuff

I don't know which one is right, but from measuring the dimensions of my DVD-Drive, I guess I need the bigger one (which would be the first)

Any help?

thanks

Re: Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

The PSREF says that the DVD drive is not removeable:

"DVD burner, 12.7mm high, fixed, not removable, tray-in

Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high,

removable, upgradable"

Wow, this really is funny... But its wrong.

I have the drive right here lying in front of me... and it has the SATA connection port just like the Ultrabay has..

So I guess I'll try the bigger 12.7mm one...

Looks like the PSREF needs updating then.  I've asked internally and am awaiting a reply.

It shouldn't be a problem if there's a SATA connection.

Re: Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

Hi Oxtailsoup, welcome to the forum

IMHO I'd say the PSREF is correct, it states;

DVD burner, 12.7mm high, fixed, not removable

Although the optical drive in a E520 is easily removed, tier 1 CRU, the PSREF is referring to the system as not having an Ultrabay.  In other words there are no other options intentionally designed, or been officially tested, for the systems OD bay..

The X30* systems ODs were actually also fixed with one screw but as there was an official battery option it states;

Ultrathin DVD burner, 7mm high, removable from Option Bay, tray-in
Modular bay for devices (DVD burner, battery), 7mm high

I'd say go with the 12.7mm bay adapter.

Edit;  to doule check regarding fit and if the outer edge fits snug:  If you know someone with a T4**/t5** system which have the 12.7mm bay you could borrow their OD to see if there are going to be any problems with bezel thickness etc.

Re: Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

Thanks for the hint... I guess I will go ahead and try the 12.7mm version.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone here with a Thinkpad, so it's just me Smiley Happy

By the way I attached a photo of my DVD drive, It definately looks like a Ultrabay... So I guess they should update the PSREF...

Thanks anyway!

Re: Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

Any retailers in your area who stock ThinkPads, maybe you could pay a visit to them?

Like I said my interpretation is the PSREF refers to there being no official approved options for the bay.  Also with the exception of the X3** and as far as I can remember, all ultrabays have separate release / locking mechanisms for keeping the inserted option from accidentally dropping out.

I guess it a question of definitions, what defines an ultrabay?  Is it that there are officially supported options for it or whether or not it's a CRU.  If the latter were the case about 80% of notebooks with ODs would be ultrabay systems or whatever the manufacturer calls their optical bay.

Re: Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

Okay maybe thats the case

Well in fact here Lenovo says:

"Optical drive: Ultrabay enhanced DVD/CD-RW combo drive"

and a few lines lower:

"Supports one additional hard drive which can be used concurrently to offer expanded storage in the Ultrabay Slim Media Bay."
