Windows 8 product key on E430

2012-12-08, 13:05 PM

I don't find product key on the laptop, talked to a Lenovo rep who wasted 30 mins and couldn't help other than telling me to look for the key under the battery which isn't there.  Can someone tell me how to get the product key out of my laptop.

the product key is within the bios itself. Boot into your BIOS and you would see it there.

its called Preinstalled Windows license within the BIOS menu, your OS will see it, but it won't be readable by normal users without special softwares.

When you reinstall Win 8, you won't need to re-enter the OS serial number, nor is the serial number transferable to another PC.

If I choose to install off of a windows 8 disk (clean windows install) instead of using the restore, will it still read the key off of the bios?

Windows 8 is absolute pain to use. Some basic featrues like updates doesn't work. On my PC I see there are 500MB of updates which gets installed but fails when the laptop reboots. I also would like to do a clean installation but not sure where to get the Image and if the OS will read the product key automatically from the BIOS.

If you just got your computer then its update:

KB2770917

that is failing.

Hide that update and run windows update.

Then download that update straight from Microsoft (not using the update program)

Go to msconfig (you can search it as well)

Do a diagnostic startup

Run the update file you downloaded and that should take care of it.

You can then unhide it from your update program and it will act like it is going to run again but it will do it successfully

Unlike Win7, from what I've read it's nearly impossible to re-install Win8 and move your slic / token files over.  You need a restore disc from the manufacturer more or less, or to send the hdd in for re-imaging.  All the threads I've seen resulted in failure to re-install Win8 even with a personal retail-bought disc (!), and ended with back-tracking to Win7 (one way or another.)  As Jin Li said, you can find "special softwares" on the internet which will reveal your 5x5 key, but it's not going to help ...

Re: Windows 8 product key on E430

Not true. I suffered through 20 hrs of figuring out what is going on.

I have an E430 that shipped with Win7-64 Premium. I just upgraded it to Win-8 Pro for a Microsoft WIn8 upgrade DVD.

I had no problems at all.

I also jut got X230 laptops that came with Win8, and discovered that the machines come configured with UEFI BIOS and GPT file systems.  If you create a Recovery Drive to image the machine, you cannot see the UEFI partitions after you boot into the Recovery Environment from the external USB Recovery Drive you created, unless UEFI ONLY boot is configured in BIOS.   I ran into a problem using thrid party DiskImaging software, because with UEFI and Win8, the laptop will not boot from any other OS unless UEFI Boot is disabled, and LEGACY BOOT is enabled.

I obtained Lenovo Win8 Recovery DIsks to recreate my machine, and in their instructions it tells you to ENABLE LEGACY BOOT.  But they forget to tell you to re-enable UEFI BOOT ONLY after you are done, and as a result no Windows DVD or Recovery Drive will see the existing partitions when you boot into the Recovery Environment.

I spent about 24 hrs testing the above and was able to recreate the x230 from Lenovo DVDs, as well as create and use the Win8 Recovery Environment.

u

However the best tool, and at present the only one that I know works on Win8 with UEFI and GPT partitions, is  to  image and restore your Win8 machine with WIndows 7 File Recovery, which allows you to set up one time or scheduled System Image and file backups, so you can restore your machine to a working state, after you have invested many hours installing and configuring software.   You can find Windows 7 FIle Recovery by using the Search option in Explorer.

If you use the Lenovo Recovery Discs, which I recommend getting no matter what, you have choice of creating your Win8 machine with MBR instead of GPT file system.  If you do that, you will not have any of the problems imaging and restoring Win8 with any imaging software in the market.   I have been using Active Disk Image from LSOFT.NET for many years, on hundreds of machines, including RAID5 with SAS drives on Lenovo Win 20003 servers.
