The new ThinkPad Edge E220s and E420s systems contain special feature - a hardware reset button which is accessed through a small reset hole on the base cover. This feature is helpful because the battery is integrated on these models and cannot be simply removed as part of a reset process as on many prior ThinkPad models.
The reset button is accessed through a small hole next to one of the case screw locations on the bottom of the system, near the center of the system.
The reset button hole can be used in the following situations:
A unit will not power on, either on battery or AC power.
Try connecting AC power first to see if the unit powers on.
If the unit does not run, disconnect the AC adapter and then put a straightened paper clip into the reset hole and depress the switch for a few seconds. Try reconnecting AC power and the system should power on again at that point. If the system does not power on using either AC power or after using the reset hole, it should be serviced.
A unit will not power down using either the operating system or the power switch.
Press and hold the power button for a few seconds. If the computer does not respond, remove AC power, and put a straightened paper clip into the reset hole and depress the switch. The unit should power off.
A unit will not resume from standby.
In this case press and hold the power button for a few seconds. If the computer still does not respond, remove AC power, and put a straightened paper clip into the reset hole on the base and depress the switch to turn off the computer.
