Pressure sensitive pen / stylus for wacom digitizers (Yoga, X-series tablet X200, X220, X61, X41...)

2014-04-16, 21:10 PM

Hi all,

i am looking for a good and reasonable alternative to the included stylus of the Thinkpad Yoga (which employs a wacom digitzer).

First of all i thought it might be helpful for others to include a comparison picture in terms of size:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9963379/tp-stylus.jpg

From top to bottom these are the pens of:

 * Thinkpad Yoga S1

 * Thinkpad Android Slate Tablet (v1, 10", n-trig digitizer if I remember correctly)

 * Wacom Intuos 3

 * Good old pencil (for actual paper... ;))

As you can see, the Yoga's stylus is really really tiny, it's around 11 cm long and only 6 mm thick. Also the key for the right mouse key is in a really inconvenient spot as i keep on pressing it over and over.

The Thinkpad Slate Tablet's Pen is actually quite ok regarding the feel / thickness, it's around 10mm (as is the pencil). The wacom is around 15 mm thick on the thickest spot  and has without any doubts the best feeling of all the pens. However it does not work on the wacom digitizers of tablet PCs.

So far the only clues I found on this forum is a post from 2010:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/Wacom-digitizers-and-usable-pens/m-p/230733#M8441

This post is pointing towards Wacom pens that I can't find anymore... (articles starting with UG...)

The only pen I found on the wacom page so far was the PL-900 "for tablet PCs"

http://eu.shop.wacom.eu/accessories/pl-series/pl-900-pen?c=70200&sFromAccessoryListing=true&sAccessoryID=&sModel=70200

However it is also quite expensive. Used / new original Lenovo pens of X230 (and older slates) range around 50 US$. Does anyone know a really good pressure sensitive pen that feels great to hold and write with?

Thanks a lot!

Christian

Edit: Ah of course there should be an eraser on the back.

There's plenty of useful info here for pens: http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/microsoft/55416-tabletpc-compatible-wacom-pens-work-surface-pro.html

As for a cheap pen - eBay is your best friend here. There are plenty of cheap full size Wacom pens to be found such as these ones: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Digitizer-Stylus-Pen-For-IBM-LENOVO-ThinkPad-X60-X61-X200-X201-W700-Tablet-New-/380804006070?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&var&hash=item58a9b000b6&_uhb=1

Try finding Fujitsu Wacom pens as well - they have 2 buttons and an eraser.

Thank you very much, just the information I was looking for.

The ebay hongkong-pens are soso - none of them has pressure sensitivity.

Any of the Wacom Bamboo Stylus Feel pens will work with the ThinkPad Yoga. Note, none of them have erasers. If you want an Wacom pen with an eraser (that works) this is the only one that will work https://store.wacom.com/us/en/product/UP710E/

I can personally verify that the Intuos pens do not work (and Wacom tech support verified that) and that the UP710E does work in any application that supports the eraser (Photoshop, OneNote, etc.).

I'm not sure if this response adds anything at this stage, but I can verify that an intuos 2 pen will not work. I've just tried it. So buying an old intuos with a view to scavenging the pen is a bad idea.

Regarding the Fujitsu Wacom pens - does anyone know if the eraser on those pens works with the ThinkPad Yoga?

Fujitsu Gateway Wacom Executive Stylus Pen

These cost $25 on eBay.

Hello,

I'd like to add that the stylus from Samsung Note III works great as a preasure sensitive pen on Yoga ThinkPad. It hasn't an eraser button.

Best Regards,

Artur

Has anyone tried the new Lenovo Active Pen with the X230? I was wondering if it's compatible.

Or is it that any non-active wacom pen works? My Samsung Note 4 pen works, but it has no eraser and it is too small to use all the time.

Thanks!
